Yoel Romero has dazzled fans in his first two bouts of 2018, first clubbing former champ Luke Rockhold into unconsciousness in February, then engaging current champ Robert Whittaker in one of the year’s best fights in June. Unfortunately, both of Romero’s 2018 bouts have been served with a side of controversy, as he failed to make weight on both occasions. It’s for this reason that surging middleweight contender Israel Adesanya has found it hard to root for him.
In Adesanya’s eyes, Romero’s repeated failure to make weight is encroaching on cheating.
“Look at Romero in his last fight,” Adesanya told MMA Fighting’s Peter Carroll of Yoel Romero. “Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t really care in the end because it was such a good fight, but regardless of what happened I didn’t want Romero to win.”
“Fuck that, the guy missed weight and it’s not even the first time he missed weight,” Adesanya said. “And he’s been caught doing other stuff in the past too. I think there’s an element of gaming the system there, it’s almost cheating to be honest.”

According to Adesanya, there’s no reason for fighters to deplete themselves with extreme weight cuts in order to be bigger than their opponents. That’s the reason he’s been undersized in his first two UFC bouts, and the reason you won’t be seeing him fighting at welterweight.
“I’ve had two UFC fights now and both times I’ve been underweight,” he said. “I’m not even trying to be underweight I just keep sweating every time I come out of the bathtub. Honestly, it’s easy for me. I’m not trying to be one of those guys that’s bigger than everyone else in the weight class. People ask me, ‘Why don’t you go to welterweight?’ F*ck that, I’d have to lose my nuts to get down there.”
Israel Adesanya takes on Brad Tavares in the main event of the Ultimate Fighter 27 Finale this Friday in Las Vegas. What do you think of his comments on Yoel Romero?
