Sergio Pettis made his return to the UFC’s bantamweight division at tonight’s UFC on FOX 31 event in his hometown of Milwaukee against Rob Font.
Pettis entered tonight’s contest on the heels of a unanimous decision setback to Jussier Formiga in his most recent octagon appearance at September’s UFC 229 event in Las Vegas.
Prior to that, Sergio Pettis had defeated Joseph Benavidez via split-decision at UFC 225.
As for Rob Font (15-4 MMA), the 31-year-old was most recently seen in action at UFC 226, where he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Raphael Assunção.
Round one of this UFC on FOX 31 main card bantamweight bout begins and Font comes out quickly with his jab. Pettis returns fire with a low kick. More jabs from Font. He goes to the body with a pair. Pettis looks to reply with a low kick but eats an uppercut for his efforts. Another stiff jab from Rob Font. Pettis throws a nice jab now. He moves in with a low kick that connects. Font returns fire with a combination. Pettis responds with a kick to the body. Font with a nice hook to the body of Pettis. Sergio circles and then lands a body kick followed by a jab. Another good body shot from Font. He is applying a ton of pressure. Font with a jab and then a right hook. He rips the body but Sergio Pettis counters with a right hand. Font with a low kick and then a right hand up the middle. Pettis circles and lands a low kick. He shoots in for a takedown but Font stuffs it and then trips Sergio to the floor winding up in top position. Font begins working from Pettis’ guard. Sergio Pettis is doing a good job of preventing much damage. Font postures up and lands a big punch from the top. He lands another. Pettis looks for a sweep but it is not there. Font continues to work. Pettis stands up and lands a spinning kick. Round one comes to an end.

Round two begins and Rob Font sticks a right hand early. Pettis replies with a nice left. The Milwaukee native circles along the fence. Font continues to move forward and lands a combination. He shoots in for a takedown but Pettis stuffs the shot. Sergio Pettis with a nice right hand over the top. Font replies with a snapping left jab. Pettis goes high with a kick that partially connects. Font side steps and then lands another jab followed by a low kick. Sergio Pettis and Rob Font exchange jabs. Font rips a hook to the body. He shoots in for a takedown but Pettis denies him on entry. Pettis misses with a front kick. Font lands a pair of left jabs. Sergio is busted up now. His eye is bruised and bleeding. Font with a nice low kick. Pettis circles and lands a low kick. He looks to set up a high kick but Font blocks it well. Both men connect with jabs. Pettis again tries a high kick. The fighters trade low kicks and then more jabs. Just over one minute remains in round two. Sergio Pettis with a low kick and then a right hand over the top. Font eats the shot and responds with a left jab. Pettis with another nice combination. Font leaps into the pocket with an uppercut. He shoots in for a takedown but Pettis defends and winds up in top position. Font looks for a kimura and then transitions into a straight armbar attempt. This looks tight. Pettis escapes and the horn sounds to end round two.

Round three begins and Sergio Pettis comes forward with a left hand. Font avoids and lands a jab followed by a knee to the mid section. Pettis with a jab and then a low kick. He follows that up with a nice right hand. Pettis with a jab but Font replies with a front kick to the body. Rob is working his jab again now. Pettis attempts a spinning back kick but it just misses. Pettis leaps in with a combination but Font times it and scores a takedown. Rob Font is working from the guard of Sergio Pettis now. He looks to pass to half guard but Sergio denies the pass. Pettis scrambles but gives up his back. Font works some punches as Pettis attempts to get back to his feet. Sergio eventually stands back up but Rob drags him back down to the floor immediately. Font again begins working from Pettis’ full guard. He postures up and lands a right hand. He rolls for a submission but the horn sounds to end round three.
