“I can make you rich. I’ll change your bum life. You fight me, it’s a celebration. When you sign to fight me, it’s a celebration. You ring back home, you ring your wife. ‘Baby, we’ve done it! We’re rich, baby! Conor McGregor made us rich. Break out the red panties! We’re rich baby!”
That was the notorious statement from Conor McGregor, which he addressed towards the at the time UFC lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos at the UFC’s “Go Big” press conference in 2015.
However, what “The Notorious” had to say does not apparently ring true for all of his opponents.
Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone was a guest on the “Norton & Friends” show on Wednesday and explained how things work with the UFC.
“So, a lot of people say if you get the Conor fight, that’s the money,” Cerrone said. “Like, you hear people on the Internet, ‘That’s the money fight. He’s the money fight.’ It doesn’t work like that. I’m obligated under contract to make ‘X’ amount of dollars no matter who I fight. Unless you’re a champion, which Eddie is. Because when you’re a champion, you get the pay-per-view dollars.
“If Eddie were to fight me, probably not as many pay-per-view dollars as bringing Conor in. So that’s smart fight for Eddie, 1000 percent not to pick me and to pick Conor. I understand that.
“People are always telling me, ‘You need to take that Conor fight. That’s where the money is.’ I’m like, ‘Nah, it doesn’t work like that guys.’ I wish it did.”
Regarding who he is picking to win in the fight between Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor at UFC 205, “Cowboy” is rooting for the Philadelphian.
“Eddie is tough. I hope Eddie goes out there and gets the win, for sure. You know? I’m rooting for him.
“I wish I had this fight. This is the fight I was lobbying for, the Eddie fight. But, hey it makes more sense for [Eddie to fight Conor].”
Donald Cerrone will meet Kelvin Gastelum in a welterweight bout on the same UFC 205 card as Eddie Alvarez vs. Conor McGregor, which takes place on November 12 at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
