Fabricio Werdum picked up the win tonight against Mark Hunt by way of knockout and is now the UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion! Hunt was calm in his defeat and despite suffering knockouts in his last two losses, he seems prepared to jump right back on the horse.
Hunt seemed to be on his way to a quick victory after he knocked Werdum down early on in the first. Werdum made it back to his feet, but to everyone’s surprise Hunt shot for a takedown! Hunt was successful in his takedown attempt but landed directly in Werdum’s guard. Werdum was pressed up against the fence and had little room to work with, so he was unable to trap Hunt in a submission. As soon as Werdum’s guard opened back up, Hunt stood back up to his feet and cracked Werdum with a couple shots. These punches caused Werdum to stiffen up and fight cautiously.
Hunt continued to control the pace in the second and made Werdum think about every shot he threw. The majority of the blows Werdum landed were simple leg kicks while Hunt dropped him multiple times. Hunt started to get confident and his hands began to drop lower as each second passed.
Werdum lunged from three feet out and crashed his knee into the skull of Hunt. The shot was unprotected and Hunt was caught clean. Hunt tumbled to the mat and Werdum dove on him to finish the fight. Herb Dean gave Hunt every single opportunity to improve his positioning and fight back, but he was completely out of it.
