UFC prospect Sage Northcutt is headed back down to 155 pounds after a bit of a rough stretch at welterweight. After going 2-0 in the UFC in 2015, defeating Francisco Trevino and Cody Pfister after being discovered on UFC President Dana White’s “Lookin’ For A Fight” series, Northcutt experienced the first loss of his professional career as he dropped a submission loss to Bryan Barberena at UFC on FOX 18 in his welterweight debut. Following that, Northcutt returned to 155, where he picked up a unanimous decision win over Enrique Marin at UFC 200. Most recently, Northcutt faced fellow “Lookin’ For A Fight” alum Mickey Gall in a highly anticipated ‘UFC Fight Night: Sacramento’ scrap in December at welterweight. Northcutt lost the bout via submission in the 2nd round, marking his second straight defeat at welterweight.
Now, following announcing that he will be taking time off from college to train full time, Sage Northcutt has revealed in an interview on The MMA Hour that he will be returning to lightweight:
“You know, obviously, anytime you lose you learn from it,” he said on Monday. “Not that you regret it but it’s a learning experience, and I’ll be back down at 155 now. I’m a natural 155er. So, that’ll be a good weight class for me.”
Following his most recent defeat, Northcutt is targeting an April or May return to the Octagon:
“Yes sir, [I don’t have an] exactly a set date, but maybe sometime in the next three months, four months, and back at 155. So I’ll be learning the most I can until then, and improving.”
“I don’t have an opponent in mind, it’s who the UFC gives me,” he said. “But definitely going to be at 155.”
