{"id":459240,"date":"2022-09-27T06:21:42","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T13:21:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/?p=459240"},"modified":"2022-09-27T06:21:42","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T13:21:42","slug":"chael-sonnen-explains-why-ufc-fighters-are-wrong-to-complain-about-sponsor-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/ufc\/chael-sonnen-explains-why-ufc-fighters-are-wrong-to-complain-about-sponsor-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Chael Sonnen explains why UFC fighters are wrong to complain about sponsor law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chael Sonnen has given his thoughts on fighters complaining about the way in which sponsors are handled in the UFC.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since Reebok came through the door and introduced uniforms for fighters to wear, there&#8217;s been <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/ufc\/francis-ngannou-echoes-luke-rockholds-fighter-pay-complaints-fighters-are-ripped-off\/\">a lot of controversy<\/a> regarding how much money the fighters are getting paid as part of the deal &#8211; especially in comparison to what they were able to make when they had fight sponsors of their own.<\/p>\n<p>Chael Sonnen, who spent his career outside of the &#8216;uniform&#8217; era that the UFC is currently in, had a few thoughts on the matter in a new video uploaded to his channel.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dana White didn\u2019t take your sponsors\u2026\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FsWY9sWsRVU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThere is an underhandedness felt by the athletes as it pertains to the way sponsorships work out. They\u2019re feeling that they\u2019re being mistreated,\u201d Sonnen said. \u201cNobody would feel that way if it wasn\u2019t for the generosity shown in this sport. Listen, at one point, the UFC allowed athletes to go get their own sponsors. \u2018We\u2019re gonna set the cameras up, we\u2019re gonna pop the popcorn, we\u2019re gonna get all the eyeballs. You can have the money, as long as you find it.\u2019 That got a little out of hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIf there\u2019s anything that looked bad to the cameras, it was the fact that we weren\u2019t uniform\u2026 Big brand called Reebok (came in). So, the generosity that never should have been given \u2014 nobody in the history of television and production has ever been given the ability (where) somebody else pays for everything and you get to keep the sponsorships,\u201d Sonnen added. \u201cThat has simply never happened and will not happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cA lot of fighters didn\u2019t understand. So, when the generosity they never should have been \u2014 never should have happened. We never should have been to put anybody we want when (UFC) is paying for the cameras. When that went away, what fighters didn\u2019t understand is that was unique to our industry. It was a generosity and kindness\u2026 they feel as though a rug has been pulled out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to make sure you understand. Fighters being able to keep sponsorship money for that part of the industry\u2026 has never happened, and we never should have been able to do that. It truly was a mistake, generosity to the point of a mistake \u2019cause fighters think it was taken away and it was underhanded. They\u2019re wrong. They\u2019re just flat-wrong.
