Fans will never hear Daniel Cormier refer to UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman as \u2018Marty\u2019 ever again.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s according to the man himself, as \u2018DC\u2019 recently opened up on how \u2018The Nigerian Nightmare\u2019 became known as \u2018Marty\u2019 during his amateur wrestling days.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what I love about that story, though, with Usman, is he said when he started wrestling, they didn\u2019t want to put the effort into calling him by his full name [Kamarudeen]. So, they said, \u2018Let\u2019s just call him Marty.\u2019 And then, he had just accepted that. But then, you know, as he became a man, he goes, \u2018No. I will be called by my name. I will be called by my given name. Respect me enough to put the [effort]. He almost grew up into his name.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Daniel Cormier continued to discuss Kamaru Usman on his latest edition of \u2018The DC Check-In\u2019 featuring Deron Winn (h\/t Sportskeeda<\/a>):<\/p>\n

“And for me, that is so special. Right? You love that he grew into his name. He\u2019s so strong now \u2013 as a champion and as a face of the UFC \u2013 that that whole story to me is.\u201d <\/em>Cormier explained, \u201cBecause we all called him that. That\u2019s what you called him in wrestling because that\u2019s what everybody else called him. But I will never call him that again because he asked me for; as a friend, as a man that I knew from wrestling, he goes, \u2018Hey, man. Call me Kamaru.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Kamaru Usman most recently competed at November\u2019s UFC 268 event, where for the second time in his career he defeated Colby Covington<\/a> to successfully defend his welterweight world title.<\/p>\n
