{"id":402599,"date":"2021-12-28T11:00:46","date_gmt":"2021-12-28T19:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/?p=402599"},"modified":"2021-12-28T11:00:46","modified_gmt":"2021-12-28T19:00:46","slug":"manager-provides-grim-update-on-contract-negotiations-between-francis-ngannou-and-the-ufc-i-hate-to-say-this-but-it-feels-like-a-standoff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/ufc\/manager-provides-grim-update-on-contract-negotiations-between-francis-ngannou-and-the-ufc-i-hate-to-say-this-but-it-feels-like-a-standoff\/","title":{"rendered":"Manager provides grim update on contract negotiations between Francis Ngannou and the UFC: \u201cI hate to say this, but it feels like a standoff\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Francis Ngannou is competing in the final fight of his current contract on January 22nd in Anaheim when he squares off with Ciryl Gane at UFC 270.<\/p>\n<p>It could be the last time we see Ngannou, 35, inside the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ufc.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Octagon<\/a>, as he refused to sign a contract extension earlier this year citing it was a lowball offer.<\/p>\n<p>Francis Ngannou&#8217;s agent, Marquel Martin of CAA (Creative Artis Agency) commented on Sirius XM&#8217;s &#8220;Throwing Down with Renee and Miesha&#8221; (h\/t <a href=\"http:\/\/www.MMAFighting.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MMAFIGHTING<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFrom the beginning, we\u2019ve always and still do remain, like, open to negotiating with UFC. Even from my standpoint and his representation\u2019s standpoint, UFC is the best MMA promoter in the game, in the business. However, it has to make sense for Francis. At the end of the day, I work for Francis, and he and I spent a lot of time chatting back and forth and trying to understand, okay, exactly what does that mean for his future, and we\u2019ve had a lot of back and forth with the UFC. But to be honest with you, I haven\u2019t heard back from the UFC since, I want to say June.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The fact that Martin represents CAA which is a direct competitor to Endeavor, which was acquired by UFC in 2016, probably doesn&#8217;t help the concerns Ngannou has over his most recent contract extension offer.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou hear this false narrative of representation [at UFC],\u201d<\/em> Martin continued. \u201c<em>What does representation look like in your mind, UFC? To say yes to every single thing that you do. Am I supposed to take you out to dinner, be your best friend? No, I have a fiduciary obligation to my client, and the facts are, okay, if you want to judge me and try to put me out of business for whatever reason and bully me publicly, I don\u2019t respond to that. CAA doesn\u2019t respond to that. We know how to do our job. We\u2019re very competent at what we do.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLet me make this clear: It\u2019s not all about money,\u201d<\/em> Martin said. \u201c<em>It is 1000 percent not all about money, and they know that. But at the end of the day, the UFC has a business model, that\u2019s how they run it with all their fighters. They can\u2019t put themselves in a situation to establish a precedent that negatively reflects [on] them, so that\u2019s kind of the rub. If they had an offer that made sense for them and for Francis, we\u2019re open to entertain it. They\u2019ve made it pretty clear where they\u2019re at, so it\u2019s an unfortunate, and I hate to say this, but it feels like a standoff.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_391860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-391860\" style=\"width: 696px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-391860\" src=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Francis-Ngannou-Ciryl-Gane.jpg\" alt=\"Francis-Ngannou-Ciryl-Gane\" width=\"696\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Francis-Ngannou-Ciryl-Gane.jpg 696w, https:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Francis-Ngannou-Ciryl-Gane-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Francis-Ngannou-Ciryl-Gane-640x367.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-391860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gane vs. Ngannou<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In response to Martin, Dana White commented that he is <em>&#8220;full of shit&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The fact that Ngannou has had five straight victories by way of knockouts doesn&#8217;t appear to hold much weight at the bargaining table. Perhaps a win against Gane at UFC 270 will aid in <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/jorge-masvidal\/colby-covington-questions-jorge-masvidals-bmf-status-amid-stalled-negotiations\/\">negotiations<\/a>. Either way, Dana White is sure to be asked about the status of Ngannou after the fight.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Ciryl Gane commented on the upcoming fight with Ngannou citing:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI think Francis Ngannou did a lot these last years, and he probably improved and he\u2019s more intelligent. And that\u2019s really great. He\u2019s really well rounded now, and I think it\u2019s going to be more like that. Because he knows I can manage the power. I think he knows I can manage the power. So maybe he should be a smart fighter this day [when we fight].\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m going to manage the fight. I\u2019m going to win after five rounds,\u201d <\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\">Gane said when asked for a prediction.<\/span><em><span class=\"s1\"> \u201cMaybe before (I win) with a submission or something like that, why not?
