Justin Gaethje walked away from his war with Michael Chandler<\/a> at UFC 268 with his hand raised.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t quite smooth sailing for “The Highlight”, however \u2013 not only in the form of fist meeting face but regarding officiating as well. A miscommunication in the second round following an eye poke to Gaethje led to referee Mike Beltran having a quick exchange with the former interim lightweight champ as Beltran believed it was a punch.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hate to critique the guy \u2013 he\u2019s human, and we make mistakes,\u201d Justin Gaethje said on the Anik and Florian podcast<\/a> (h\/t MMA Fighting<\/a>). \u201cI just think that … pretty much every ref that I step out there with has a look in their eyes, and it\u2019s a look like they\u2019re shook, like they\u2019re intimidated by what just occurred.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand that, but this is real life. I need them to be in game mode. We\u2019re not dealing with seconds anymore. This is way less than seconds. if you\u2019re going to break action, you\u2019ve got to put your body in there. If you\u2019re going to get hit, that needs to be OK.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was a big punch,\u201d he continued. \u201cWhat if that would have knocked me out? Those can change the whole direction of a fight. It\u2019s just crazy to me that it wasn\u2019t a big issue, because for me it was a huge issue. That\u2019s $1 million, if I lose, that\u2019s so much money off of my table.\u201d<\/p>\n

Justin Gaethje would ultimately rebound after a loss in his title tilt opposite Khabib Nurmagomedov a year prior. His unanimous decision victory over Chandler resulted in the two earning an extra $50,000 with fight of the night honors.<\/p>\n

In the end, Gaethje admits to being more upset than he normally would be due to Beltran’s efforts to try and justify his side of things backstage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my mind, I think he\u2019s referencing the punch that just occurred,\u201d Gaethje said. \u201cAnd so, I\u2019m like, yeah, I\u2019m good, because as a fighter, you never say you\u2019re not good to continue. So then he was like, \u2018OK, fight.\u2019 I was like, \u2018No, I need my time. He poked me in the eye.\u2019 And he looks directly at me and he says, \u2018You said you\u2019re good, fight.\u2019 And he never looked at my eye.
