Former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith can relate to the recent emotional struggles of Khamzat Chimaev.<\/p>\n

Chimaev (9-0 MMA) recently shocked fight fans by announcing his retirement<\/a> from the sport of mixed martial arts. \u2018Borz\u2019 was one of many people to fall victim to the global pandemic and lingering symptoms from the virus have kept him out of the Octagon.<\/p>\n

Chimaev\u2019s retirement claims were quickly refuted<\/a> by UFC President Dana White, who suggested the undefeated fighter was just emotional from not being able to train.<\/p>\n

Former UFC title challenger Anthony Smith can sympathize with the current emotions being experienced by Khamzat Chimaev. \u2018Lionheart\u2019 shared the following information during a recent interview with Sirius XM (via MMAFighting<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look at the hill, and sometimes, it doesn\u2019t even seem like it\u2019s worth it,\u201d Smith said referencing his previous adversity with injuries. \u201cWhen you\u2019re injured, and it just seems like a mountain you can\u2019t climb. When I hurt my hand after Gustafsson, and then the surgery failed, the bones shifted again, the plate broke, and they had to do it again. Sometimes, when your body betrays you, it seems like it\u2019s just too much and you\u2019re never going to be the same, and if you can\u2019t be the same, you don\u2019t want to compete if you can\u2019t be the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anthony Smith continued:<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s used to being a f*cking killer. He\u2019s out here smoking people. It\u2019s not even competitive at this point yet. And now he\u2019s a shell of himself? There\u2019s more than just physical stuff that goes along with it. There\u2019s a lot of mental stuff. He\u2019s not used to being weak. He\u2019s not used to struggling, he\u2019s not used to having a tough time because he\u2019s so good and he works so damn hard.\u201d<\/p>\n
