Unfortunately for him, that lucrative and high-profile opportunity went to Donald &#8220;Cowboy&#8221; Cerrone \u2014 a man Gaethje defeated in August.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, Gaethje is not particularly pleased with the way things have shaken out. Currently without an opponent, but eager to stake his claim to a title shot, he sounded off on this McGregor vs. Cerrone matchup during an appearance on MMA on SiriusXM.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/MMAonSiriusXM\/status\/1201867432777924608<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, it\u2019s a freak show man. I don\u2019t know what to make of it,\u201d Justin Gaethje said of this McGregor vs. Cerrone matchup, which will occur in the welterweight division (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmanytt.com\/latest-news\/justin-gaethje-mcgregor-cerrone-freak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MMANytt<\/a>). \u201cFor me, I think it\u2019s good, it takes [McGregor] out of the picture. It kind of clears the path to what needs to happen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fighting at 170\u2026 I don\u2019t know how in his mind he can say \u2018I\u2019ll fight in 170 and then fight for the world title next.\u2019 I\u2019d like to think it is because he doesn\u2019t want to fight me, but I don\u2019t think I\u2019m that scary. I don\u2019t understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gaethje continued, sharing his belief that a\u00a0 welterweight win over Cerrone will do nothing to improve McGregor&#8217;s station at lightweight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he wants to fight for a world title, he has to get another win in the lightweight division,\u201d Gaethje said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure he knows that he\u2019s gonna put pressure on Dana [White] and the UFC to give him a title fight after\u2026 If he beats Cowboy at 170.
