Last weekend, in the opening bout of the UFC 235 main card, former UFC bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt experienced his third-straight knockout loss. Justin Buchholz, who used to serve as Garbrandt’s head coach at Team Alpha Male, believes he knows why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on The TSN MMA Show<\/a> this week, Buchholz attributed Garbrandt’s latest setback to subpar coaching at the Team Alpha Male.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey make a situation that is kind of simple, way too simple,\u201d a fired up Buchholz said (transcript via MMA Fighting<\/a>). \u201cThey\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, he decided to throw caution to the wind.\u2019 Well where was that guy, where was the guy who threw caution to the wind, kill or be killed<\/a>, I\u2019m just gonna go run across the cage holding my right hand out with my hands down, where was that guy when he fought Dominick Cruz?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c. . . It\u2019s not kill or be killed. It\u2019s win this fight. Get the W. It just pisses me off when people say, \u2018Oh he just got emotional. He just decided to do this.\u2019 That\u2019s all from training! That\u2019s all from the camp. That\u2019s all from the cues you receive from your coach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buchholz continued, explaining that the poor coaching at Team Alpha Male is a product of founder Urijah Faber’s “ego.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you think of it like football, it\u2019s like the owner of the team got jealous of the head coach and then showed up on the field and started coaching instead of sitting back and kicking his feet up saying, \u2018I started the team, I own the team, everything you do makes my shine brighter\u2019\u201d Buchholz explained. \u201cBut some people can\u2019t understand that because they can\u2019t see past their own ego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can say whatever you want but the results speak for themselves. Cody\u2019s only fights against top-10 opponents are Pedro Munhoz, T.J. Dillashaw, and then Dominick Cruz, and Dominick Cruz was the best out of all of them and he master-classed him but he couldn\u2019t get past those other guys. It has a lot to do with coaching, the program, it\u2019s all that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Needless to say, Justin Buchholz and Urijah Faber are no longer close. In fact, it’d take some serious apologizing on Faber’s part to ever convince Buchholz to return to Team Alpha Male.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would never go back to that gym,\u201d Buchholz proclaimed. \u201cWhat I did there, I was there for 10 years. I was the first UFC fighter to fight out of Alpha Male. The social media, I did all of that. I started it from scratch. I made the Team Alpha Male Instagram, I ran that and it was the biggest team Instagram in the sport. . . The logo on all their shirts, I designed that logo. I was a huge part of that and I didn\u2019t think that I ever, ever leave that. I thought that I was gonna die as head coach of Alpha Male but c\u2019est la vie<\/em>. Things don\u2019t always work out the way you think they are and sometimes they turn out better for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor me to ever coach Alpha Male again, that door is closed. Urijah would have to lick my boot if he wanted me to go back in that gym and even then I don\u2019t think I\u2019d do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
