For Conor McGregor, however, the absence of his greatest rival might shift his focus to prized fisticuffs over reclaiming the UFC title\u2014a leather, gold-plated strap that never mattered in the first place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one is cancelling red panty night over a lightweight\ntitle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nurmagomedov might be the baddest 155-pounder on the planet\nin the octagon, but McGregor\u2019s milk brings all the fans to the yard. He\u2019s the\ngolden calf of MMA viewership whether he\u2019s champion or not. As long as he\u2019s showing\nup late to press conferences, humiliating his peers verbally, swigging Irish whiskey\nand bouncing heads off the canvas, the entire combat sports world will continue\neating out of the palm of his hand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t make the mistake of believing the transference of a championship translates into popularity. Former champion Cain Velasquez is arguably the greatest heavyweight fighter in UFC history, but he wasn\u2019t breaking pay-per-view records after he defeated Brock Lesnar. Amanda Nunes is the baddest woman on the planet, but unlike Ronda Rousey, she isn\u2019t the hot-topic for debate amongst middle-aged soccer moms that normally wouldn\u2019t tune in to the UFC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chris Weidman stopped Anderson Silva twice, and while he\nremains one of the best middleweight fighters in the world, he has only\nheadlined one UFC pay-per-view without Silva as his dance partner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McGregor doesn\u2019t need a rematch with Nurmagomedov for\nanything more than validating our own curiosities as hardcore consumers. If the\nfire within him burns bright enough for a redemption bout, he\u2019d chase after it\nthe same way he did after being submitted by Diaz. But there\u2019s also the option\nof not allowing his career to be tethered to one title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McGregor\u2019s Hall of Fame legacy was cemented when he became\nthe first simultaneous, two-division UFC champion. It\u2019s easy to forget he\u2019s a\nfeatherweight fighter that bumped up to the lightweight division. His venture\nto 155 pounds stemmed from his desire to conquer feats that no one else before\nhim had ever achieved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if he came back and defeated Nurmagomedov in a rematch,\nthere was never going to be a scenario where he\u2019d opt to stick around and\ndefend the belt consistently. He\u2019s far too much of a nomad to be married to a UFC\nchampionship. If sustainability was a legitimate goal, he would have never left\nhis cozy spot atop the featherweight division in the first place. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He never cared about breaking title defense records or getting pats on the back for consistently knocking off top contenders. It was always about chasing the white whale\u2014the biggest fish in the ocean that garnered the most attention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Little did he know he\u2019d turn into the very thing he was\nchasing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The white whale isn\u2019t a rematch with Nurmagomedov, a super\nfight with Georges St-Pierre or even a No. 1 contender\u2019s bout with Tony\nFerguson. It\u2019s every fight that enlists McGregor as the headliner. He could\nheadline a UFC fight card with Paulie Malignaggi, and it would do better pay-per-view\nnumbers than any lightweight title fight the promotion could possibly put\ntogether. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freedom from the UFC belt gives him a chance to hand-pick\nthe marquee fights that pique his interest rather than running through a\ngauntlet of contenders and bad style matches. That\u2019s the luxury of being on the\nA side of the ticket, which is still the case for McGregor even after losing in\ndecisive fashion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nurmagomedov opting to sit out an entire year also fuels him from a marketing standpoint. The UFC is already moving on with the <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/ufc\/max-holloway-returns-at-ufc-236-for-interim-lightweight-title-fight-with-dustin-poirier\/\">recently announced interim lightweight title bout<\/a> between Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier. Casual fight fans have a short-term memory, and a one-year layoff would kill some of the momentum Nurmagomedov gained in popularity after his big win at UFC 229. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cGuys can\u2019t sit out and wait that long when you have the title,\u201d UFC President Dana White said at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qXWmkU7oHi0\">UFC 234 press <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qXWmkU7oHi0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"conference (opens in a new tab)\">conference<\/a>. \u201cYou can\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>There are so many other options for McGregor outside of a rematch with Nurmagomedov, who would have to unify the belts upon return and wouldn&#8217;t even be available until beyond 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He could <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/ufc\/conor-mcgregor-and-donald-cerrone-plan-to-party-at-the-press-conference\/\">take Donald Cerrone up on that drink<\/a> and a fight that would certainly please fans, or there is always the long-awaited rubber match with <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/fighter\/nate-diaz\/\">Nate Diaz<\/a>. A super fight with Anderson Silva or even a return to featherweight shouldn\u2019t be ruled out, either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Conor McGregor Show is as popular as it\u2019s ever been with or without the UFC title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even naysayers that vehemently spill their guts on how tired they\u2019ve grown of McGregor\u2019s wild antics and churlish insults will have a front row seat in front of the television screen for his next fight.
