Unfortunately, the champion was forced out of the fight on the very day of the card, and rushed into the hospital with a collapsed hernia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This issue could keep Whittaker on the shelf for quite some time. Given that it&#8217;s already been close to a year since his last fight, the promotion has decided to create an interim middleweight title to keep the division moving in his stead. The interim title fight will occur at UFC 236 on April 13, when Gastelum battles undefeated contender Israel Adesanya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on his <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ymrg_10MLRE&amp;feature=player_embedded\" target=\"_blank\">Grange TV podcast<\/a> recently, Robert Whittaker reacted to this news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking to fight the winner of that,\u201d Whittaker said (transcript via <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"MMA Fighting) (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/2019\/2\/21\/18234433\/morning-report-robert-whittaker-hoping-to-fight-israel-adesanya-he-isnt-as-good-as-he-thinks-he-is\" target=\"_blank\">MMA Fighting)<\/a>. \u201cI guess, in terms of timelines and dates, it will be a month &#8211; two or three months after that. Three months maximum, one month minimum. That\u2019s the kind of timeline I\u2019m looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gastelum and Adesanya are ranked fourth and fifth respectively in the UFC middleweight division. Interestingly, Whittaker seems to find it a little ridiculous to promote a title fight that doesn&#8217;t involve the champion or any of the top-three ranked fighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you look at the poster it says Gastelum vs Adesanya, four versus five, but one, two, three aren\u2019t in the equation,\u201d Whittaker said. \u201cGastelum\u2019s a great fight for [Adesanya] to fight. I would\u2019ve liked to see him fight Romero or Rockhold or Weidman. I think they\u2019d give him a lot of trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Needless to say, Robert Whittaker isn&#8217;t quite sold on the Israel Adesanya hype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that Adesanya isn\u2019t as good as he thinks he is,\u201d Whittaker said. \u201cI think he\u2019s very good &#8211; very, very good &#8211; and I have a lot of respect for his skillset, 100 percent. He\u2019s a dangerous guy. But I don\u2019t think the pedestal that he\u2019s on is as high as everyone else thinks it is, as he thinks it is. I think his fight with Anderson Silva was the first time his stand-up capabilities were put to the test with someone with similar stand-up capabilities. . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think Adesanya\u2019s striking is as good as he believes. it is. It\u2019s very good. I\u2019m not saying his striking is bad, it\u2019s very, very good &#8211; but I just don\u2019t think it\u2019s as good as he thinks it is. The times Adesanya\u2019s looked very good is against people that don\u2019t have the greatest striking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not kickboxing,\u201d Whittaker continued. \u201cThe difference in striking in the Octagon as opposed to the ring is night and day. Comparing the two isn\u2019t applicable. Yes, he can take a lot of the skillsets over and they\u2019re very transferable, but it\u2019s not the same. It\u2019s not the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving very high technical skills in striking, isn\u2019t the same as being a very dangerous striker. If you were to look at Romero, he is not technically great at stand-up. He\u2019s not known for his technical grace with his standup, [but] most of his wins have been knockouts. He hits very hard. He hits like a truck. He\u2019s a dangerous striker. He would have to be one of the most dangerous strikers in the world. Most of his wins come by knockout standing up &#8211; punches, flying knees &#8211; he\u2019s a very, very dangerous striker but you can\u2019t say he\u2019s super technical, because he\u2019s not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAdesanya is dangerous and technical, but he\u2019s not the same as Romero.
