Although the UFC recently booked a flyweight title fight<\/a> between divisional champ Henry Cejudo and slimmed-down bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, the expectation is still that the promotion will close down its flyweight division in the near future. UFC President Dana White has sidestepped questions on this topic, but the promotion has already ejected many flyweight fighters from its roster. One of these ostracized flyweights<\/a> is Jose Torres.<\/p>\n

Speaking to BloodyElbow<\/a> this week, Jose Torres weighed in on the possible closure of the UFC flyweight division. In his eyes, any failures the flyweight division has had in attracting fans is really the fault of the UFC.<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of us did anything wrong,\u201d Torres said. \u201cWe\u2019re just small.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The division has] always been on UFC Fight Pass, it\u2019s never been a main event for years,” he added. “We\u2019ve had one main event besides the champion, and even then I think [Johnson] was a main event twice, if not three times at most. Even his record-breaking fight was a co-main event. It\u2019s disrespectful to a guy who\u2019s been so dominant.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s just not a talker, and that\u2019s fine \u2014 there\u2019s nothing wrong with that. Neither was Fedor Emelianenko, but it\u2019s the fact that the promotions helped promote him \u2014 it\u2019s a 50\/50 type of business. If you\u2019re not gonna promote him, he\u2019s only gonna be known by so many people. UFC never gave us a chance to really shine.\u201d<\/p>\n

If the UFC does disband its flyweight division, the expectation is that some flyweight fighters will be given the chance to move up to bantamweight. Despite the fact that he’s competed at bantamweight many times in the past, Jose Torres was not given this opportunity. He’s not pleased about that.<\/p>\n

\u201cHalf of my pro wins are at bantamweight, so they know I can compete at it,\u201d Torres said. \u201cI\u2019ve competed against some of the best at bantamweight, so I naturally assumed, \u2018Hey, just give me a shot.\u2019 Worst comes to worst, I lose \u2014 cut me. I\u2019m perfectly fine with that. It shows that I can\u2019t compete in the UFC\u2019s bantamweight division. That\u2019s fine. But they never gave me the opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s extremely belittling for everything I\u2019ve worked so hard to achieve, and now it\u2019s gone because I\u2019m a small guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jose Torres believes that one of the reasons the UFC’s flyweights were never given the proper platform is because UFC President Dana White has never been a fan of the division.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs of right now, the president, Dana White, is just not a fan \u2014 and never, ever has been \u2014 of the flyweight division, so why really promote and spend more money on a division you never built in the first place?\u201d<\/p>\n

Whatever the case, Jose Torres vows that, with his UFC career over, he’ll do his part to remind the MMA world that there’s more to the sport than just<\/em> the UFC .<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m gonna show the world there\u2019s more than just the UFC,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
