Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman will return to the octagon at tonight’s UFC 230 event in New York for a fight with former Strikeforce title holder Ronaldo Souza.<\/p>\n

If he can score an impressive victory over “Jacare” this evening at Madison Square Garden<\/a>, Chris Weidman believes that his next fight would surely have to be for the promotions middleweight title.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they told me I wouldn\u2019t be getting the title fight, it sucked a little bit, but I’m ready to go out there and prove myself again.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

“The All American” was last seen in action at UFC on FOX 25 in July of 2017, where he scored a third-round submission win over Kelvin Gastelum<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ironically, it is the aforementioned Kelvin Gastelum who will be receiving the next crack at current UFC middleweight kingpin Robert Whittaker.<\/a>
\nAfter losing to Weidman in July of 2017, Gastelum quickly rebounded by knocking out former title holder Michael Bisping<\/a> and then out-pointing the aforementioned “Jacare” Souza.<\/p>\n

Chris Weidman discussed the newly announced UFC 234: Gastelum vs. Whittaker headliner in a recent interview with MMAWeeekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually think Kelvin wins that fight,\u201d<\/em> Weidman said. \u201cI think he\u2019s kind of a bad matchup for Whittaker. Whittaker\u2019s more of a striker, I don\u2019t see him as extremely dangerous on the feet but he\u2019s extremely tough, durable and he\u2019s got good striking. But Gastelum has the chance to put you out with his hands and he also has the wrestling, at least offensive wrestling, that Whittaker doesn\u2019t really have. I like Gastelum in that fight.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Weidman believes that he is bound to have a rematch with Kelvin Gastelum, this time with the UFC middleweight title hanging in the balance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m probably fighting Gastelum,\u201d<\/em> Weidman predicted. \u201cThat\u2019s what I see happening. It\u2019s probably a real reality.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
