Anthony Smith, who recently won big with a submission of former title challenger Volkan Oezdemir in the UFC Moncton main event, believes he&#8217;s the obvious next opponent for the winner of this UFC 232 title fight.<\/p>\n<p id=\"qYTLqP\">\u201cI just took out the No. 2 guy in the world. I\u2019ve finished two former world champions back-to-back and then the No. 2 contender,\u201d Anthony Smith told Luke Thomas on\u00a0<em>The MMA Hour <\/em>this week (transcript via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/2018\/10\/30\/18039092\/anthony-smith-explains-why-he-would-rather-fight-hittable-jon-jones-next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MMA Fighting<\/a>). \u201cThe No. 1 contender\u2019s fighting for the title and I think that\u00a0Daniel Cormier\u00a0has all but left the division. I don\u2019t think that he\u2019s coming back to 205. I don\u2019t know who else would be in front of me. I don\u2019t know who else is a legitimate threat to either one of those guys, no matter who wins the title. You might be able to throw (Ilir) Latifi in there, but if Gustafsson wins [against Jones], then that\u2019s definitely out the window.<\/p>\n<p id=\"qfMeyl\">\u201cSo, I genuinely believe that I\u2019m the only legitimate threat to either one of those guys. And I\u2019m finishing people. There\u2019s guys who are winning, but I\u2019m finishing guys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Anthony Smith had to pick, <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/ufc\/anthony-smith-responds-to-jon-jones-saying-his-ufc-moncton-win-was-ok\/\">he&#8217;d prefer that Jones wins at UFC 232<\/a>, simply so that he has the chance to become the man to defeat the seemingly unbeatable former champion. That being said, he knows doing so will not be easy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"DZIE9G\">\u201cI\u2019d rather fight Jon Jones, because no one has a legitimate win over Jon Jones, and that\u2019s the stuff that really gets me up,\u201d Smith explained. \u201cDeep down, I truly believe that I can beat Jon Jones. But deep down, I know that I might not be able to \u2014 and that\u2019s what drives me. That\u2019s what motivates me. I\u2019ve been thinking about Jon Jones since I\u2019ve been at 205. It\u2019s never been about \u2018Shogun\u2019 or Rashad or even Volkan. It\u2019s trying to get through as many people as I can get through to get to Jon Jones.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2c74uj\">\u201cPeople can say all day that doubt is a bad thing, but I don\u2019t think that it is,\u201d Smith added. \u201cI think doubt motivates people, depending on who you are. I think that Jon Jones being the tallest task in the entire UFC will bring the best out of me, and I think that one of my biggest downfalls is that I tend to fight to my opponent\u2019s level, and fighting up to my opponent\u2019s level is always going to be a positive. You hear people talk bad about fighting to someone\u2019s level when you\u2019re fighting down to them, but I think that I\u2019m one of those guys that I just rise to the occasion when I need to, and I think that I would do the same with Jon Jones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Anthony Smith recognizes that Jon Jones would be an opponent unlike any he&#8217;s faced before, he believes he could beat him. In fact, he believes Volkan Oezdemir might have actually been the more dangerous matchup of the two.<\/p>\n<p id=\"tz05su\">\u201cI think that Volkan is one of the tougher matchups for me in the entire division just because of the way that he fights. I think that Jon Jones is less dangerous than Volkan is \u2014 Jon Jones isn\u2019t one-punch knocking out anybody,\u201d Smith explained. \u201cIt\u2019s just, that\u2019s not his style. He\u2019s super crafty, he\u2019s dynamic, I think he has a high fight IQ, but I think that he\u2019s hittable, and I think that I match up with him size-wise pretty well.
