{"id":285901,"date":"2018-09-25T06:44:21","date_gmt":"2018-09-25T13:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/?p=285901"},"modified":"2018-09-25T06:44:21","modified_gmt":"2018-09-25T13:44:21","slug":"johny-hendricks-explains-how-usada-influenced-him-to-retire-from-mma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/johny-hendricks\/johny-hendricks-explains-how-usada-influenced-him-to-retire-from-mma\/","title":{"rendered":"Johny Hendricks explains how USADA influenced him to retire from MMA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This summer, after a series of losses in the UFC middleweight division, former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks announced his retirement from MMA.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on The MMA Hour on Monday, the former champion Hendricks explained that his retirement had a lot to do with the UFC&#8217;s association with the <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/jon-jones\/usada-jon-jones-could-receive-longer-suspension-if-he-doesnt-keep-providing-credible-substantial-assistance\/\">United States Anti-Doping Agency.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Under the iron fisted rule of USADA, fighters are no longer allowed to use IVs to rehydrate after tough weight cuts. For Hendricks, who endured a brutal cut down to the welterweight division&#8217;s 170-pound limit, but was undeniably undersized for the 185-pound middleweight division, this made things very difficult.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Johny Hendricks Explains Scary Weight Cut, How USADA Played Role In Retirement | The MMA Hour\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XtpdiBji5MI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p id=\"ZiHNeO\">\u201cI think USADA\u2019s a great thing for the athletes, because it\u2019s making people be clean, right? I took 26 tests, never failed one of the them. And that was in two years; I took 26 tests, never failed one of them. But what hurts the MMA aspect is that you can\u2019t [use] IV bags,\u201d Hendricks said on the show (transcript via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmafighting.com\/2018\/9\/24\/17896980\/johny-hendricks-explains-how-usada-played-a-role-in-his-decision-to-retire-from-mma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MMA Fighting<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I\u2019m a bigger welterweight, I walk around at 210. I\u2019ve done that since I was 19 years old, walk around at 210, and the IV always brought me back. It helped me get back to life, it helped me get to where I didn\u2019t feel like I cut weight. And once USADA come into play, I had to start walking around like 190 at best, and as you can tell, I do carry a lot of weight &#8230; and that\u2019s sort of one reason why it just made it that much harder to make weight at 170.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3LYpp1\">\u201cI\u2019m just not in the sport to just be in a sport,&#8221; Johny Hendricks continued. &#8220;Does that make sense? I can do other things. If I\u2019m going to do it, I want to be the best, and I know welterweight is my best. That\u2019s where I should be. Now, like I\u2019d said, I loved the fact of USADA and I loved that you do the random drug testing. I just wish that, they have a lot of people that show up at these meets \u2014 you want to do an IV, have them test you every day. I\u2019m perfectly fine with that. You show up Monday, you get tested. Tuesday, you get tested. Wednesday, you get tested. Thursday, if you have any pee left, you can get tested on Thursday. They\u2019re there testing the IV bags, they\u2019re doing everything like that, and I think you can bring back IVs, because I think there\u2019s a lot of people that really used the IVs to help them fight better.<\/p>\n<p id=\"oQbPZJ\">\u201cOnce you took that away, you started to see some of these guys, they either had to move up or they stayed at their normal weight and they didn\u2019t perform like they used to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johny Hendricks went on to explain just how helpful the use of an IV bag can be for a fighter.<\/p>\n<p id=\"xjyT1V\">\u201cI tell everybody, go run 26 miles, take an IV,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The next day you\u2019re going to be sore, but guess what? You feel like you can run again,\u201d Hendricks said. \u201cIt\u2019s an amazing thing. All the vitamins, all the minerals that you\u2019re pulling from your body, irons and stuff like that your body really needs to compete at a high level, definitely whenever you\u2019re fighting in the UFC, you need those back in your muscles. A perfect example: Without them, I think I was fighting at maybe 50 percent. With them, I was fighting right around 90 percent, because my body was able to recover after that hard weight cut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Johny Hendricks has left MMA behind, his fighting days aren&#8217;t over. He recently signed with World Bareknuckle Fighting Federation (WBKFF). <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/johny-hendricks\/former-ufc-welterweight-champ-johny-hendricks-booked-for-bareknuckle-battle-with-bellator-vet-brennan-ward\/\">He will battle Bellator veteran Brennan Ward, sans gloves, in the promotion&#8217;s first show this fall<\/a>. He&#8217;s very excited about this opportunity.<\/p>\n<p id=\"qxwaRF\">\u201cI just got to a point where sometimes it\u2019s how much you\u2019re going to talk to get something,\u201d Johny Hendricks said of his retirement from MMA. \u201cHow bad does the press want to follow you? How much are you going to talk trash about this guy, this guy, this guy, to get the fight? And for me, I\u2019ve always been the guy that, talking trash is easy, but for me, I just wanted to try something [different]. Realistically, I\u2019ve wanted to try out boxing for a little bit, and whenever the bare knuckle TV, they came after me, they talked to me, I was pretty excited because I want to see how my hands are.<\/p>\n<p id=\"x3VSTv\">\u201cI\u2019ve been wanting to find out for a while: How good is my striking? Because I\u2019ve gone with some very, very talented boxers here in Texas, and it\u2019s just been a dream of mine. I\u2019ve been a huge boxing fan all my life.
