Earlier this month, UFC welterweight Donald Cerrone made a post to Instagram detailing a harrowing incident he experienced while cave diving.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the JRE MMA Show this week, Cerrone opened up on this cave diving incident and it sounds truly terrifying.<\/p>\n

\u201dI got my certification in high school and I am a super cave diver, man,\u201d Cerrone said (transcript via MMAMania<\/a>). \u201cI love it, I love diving, I love ship diving. So we were in Cozumel and one of my old – you could almost call him my instructor, he\u2019s taught me a lot about what I know about diving today. We dove three or four days with some buddies that were down in Cozumel, went through some ships, went through some coral reefs, just playing around. We go into a serious dive, he\u2019s getting a little bit older. His mind is still very sharp but his motor skills don\u2019t keep up much any more. And in cave diving, it\u2019s very necessary that you need [those].\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201dSo we make the jump, tie off, put these direction arrows down, they\u2019re called cookies, pointing out of the cave so if something happens, you come out. When you make a jump, you take your light and you wrap it around your neck and then you have two hands to work on the line. The guy I was with didn\u2019t follow some of our rules and in cave diving it\u2019s kind of an unwritten fact that you only worry about you coming home, I\u2019m staying alive. So Joe, if you and I are cave diving and something were to happen, I\u2019m not going in there to get you. No reason for two of us to die if only one of us is in there to die.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

\u201dSo he tries to tie off, his buoyancy makes him hit the roof of the cave. He kicks his feet and spins and all of a sudden this line that\u2019s supposed to be tied off, which is our f**king lifeline, is now wrapped around him. So I swim over to him and I try to help him unhook this line, and he goes into panic. And panic kills everyone involved. Everybody involved dies with panic and that\u2019s something I can\u2019t express enough.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201dSo he starts freaking out, hitting the roof, spinning, silt everywhere, and I just back out. Take about four or five big steps back. I grab a hold of the main line. Now it\u2019s silting. When I say it\u2019s silting, there\u2019s all this sediment that sits at the bottom of these caves, and you\u2019re in a little tiny room. So if you kick your fin hard, it kicks up dark dust, mud, sediment, silt. You can\u2019t see anything. So I back out of the silt and I grab the line. I see him in there freaking and panicking and spinning and rolling around and getting all caught up in this line. And I\u2019m like \u2018FFFFUUUUU.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201dAs soon as I go into the silt I lose everything. Where I am, my up, my down. I don\u2019t know where I am, I\u2019m panicking now. I\u2019m freaking out more than anything ever. Bang, I hit my head on the ceiling and I just close my eyes and I\u2019m like \u2018Goddamn, Cowboy, calm the f**k down, calm the f**k down, calm the f**k down. Breathe.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

\u201dI took a compass readying of the direction of the front when we tied off for the first jump. So I know 126 degrees is the way out. But in a cave, they twist and they move and they\u2019re up and they\u2019re big and they\u2019re deep and they\u2019re low. There\u2019s no rhyme or reason to how the water makes the cave. So it\u2019s kind of a direction I can think of, the first thing that comes to my mind. So I swim that way and I hit a wall. I go down and I hit a wall. I\u2019m in panic mode again and I just start swimming and kicking, I make my way out of the silt and I turn around and I\u2019m back on the main line. I find the main line to the cave again which is 800 yards to the front door. I grab a hold of the main line and I reel it in.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201dNow the entire behind me, deeper into the cave, it\u2019s free. No problem, silt free. I can see everything good. Where I need to go is silted out and blown, gone, completely washed out. I couldn\u2019t see you sitting there, but I can see everything behind us. Can\u2019t see you. I have the main line, but I don\u2019t have the jump line to get the f**k out. I\u2019m trying to remember landmarks but I can\u2019t see anything. I\u2019m like \u2018F**k, there was a split up here.\u2019 So I go back into the silt again and I\u2019m feeling around and there\u2019s a hole and I\u2019m like \u2018Is that the hole I want to go down? Where does that one go? Remember, remember.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201dTold my wife and my kid I\u2019m coming home, now I\u2019ve gotta realize how I\u2019m going to die. I\u2019ve got a notepad that I carry in my pocket to draw and write on, I\u2019m thinking \u2018What are you going to say? What\u2019s your letter going to be.\u2019 Then \u2018You\u2019re writing a f**king death letter? You\u2019re awake, you\u2019re a fighter. We figure this out. You don\u2019t find a way to quit!\u2019 This is the conversation I\u2019m having with myself while I\u2019m in complete panic mode in complete darkness.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201dI\u2019m not going to drown, so I\u2019m gonna breath this buoyancy compensator that I just filled up with air, and I\u2019m gonna breathe it til the oxygen level no longer happens and I\u2019m going to pass out. That\u2019s my, that\u2019s what I\u2019ve come to realize is how I\u2019m going to die. I\u2019m going to keep breathing this same air until I go away. And I think \u2018You f**king piece of s**t, you\u2019re giving up?\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019m crawling on the ceiling and I remember when we came in there\u2019s a huge crack that runs along the top. I kill my lights and said \u2018That crack\u2019s gonna lead to the surface. That crack\u2019s gonna give us something.\u2019 So I start panicking again because I don\u2019t know what to do, I\u2019m sucking air and I\u2019m hyperventalating and I\u2019m crawling on the ceiling looking for this crack … and goddamnit, I find it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201dI found the crack and I followed the crack and it got bigger … \u2018Calm down Cowboy, reel it in, we\u2019re here, we made it.\u2019 Follow the crack some more, it opens up, out. Boom. There\u2019s the cave. I\u2019m out. You\u2019ve made it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201dMy guy\u2019s out there. I can\u2019t even be mad at him because he panicked, he grabbed the line and he ran out the hole. He looks at me and he says \u2018So we\u2019re not diving together again ever, are we?\u2019 I said \u2018No, that was it.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
