With Bellator featherweight champion Julia Budd’s continued success and solidification as the second best 145 to ever do it, the question that comes with such always becomes, ‘what’s next?’.<\/p>\n

Last Friday night in the main event of Bellator 202, Budd put on the most impressive performance of her already dominant career. She handed the undefeated BJJ specialist Talita Nogueira her first loss with a third round TKO.<\/p>\n

While actually having a division around her unlike the perennial No. 1 in the division worldwide, the UFC champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino<\/a>, the interest in a Budd vs Cyborg fight is at an all-time high<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Having fought under the same MMA umbrellas before in the past yet never actually locking horns, the sentiment has always been that Budd wanted no part of Cyborg. As is usually what is said about 145-pound fighters that gain momentum but don’t end up fighting the Brazilian.<\/p>\n

After her recent title defense, Budd discussed the silliness in those thoughts when speaking with\u00a0FanSided<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI seen stuff saying that I\u2019m running from her and that\u2019s why I signed with Bellator. Give me a break. What we live for as martial artists is challenging ourselves and I\u2019ve faced all the best featherweights in the world, except for her, so that challenge is something our team [has talked about].<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s interesting because when I was first looking to make my MMA debut, that is who I got offered with Strikeforce. Before I had even been on the mats grappling or wrestling, they were like, \u2018You want to come over? You\u2019re fighting Cris Cyborg\u2019 and I hadn\u2019t even made the transition from Muay Thai into MMA.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Prior to making her MMA debut, Budd went 10-2 in Muay Thai which included a win over Gina Carano.<\/p>\n

Budd would debut for Bellator in 2015 after amassing a 6-2 record fighting for Strikeforce and Invicta.<\/p>\n

\u201c[I’ve] seen stuff saying that I\u2019m running from her and that\u2019s why I signed with Bellator. Give me a break. I didn\u2019t run from you; I\u2019m just not going to fight you on a week\u2019s notice or as my first fight before I\u2019d even gotten my feet wet in the sport when you\u2019ve been killing people.<\/em><\/p>\n

I was supposed to fight Fiona Muxlow on the prelims and she was headlining the show and as the fight got closer, Ediane Gomes pulled out of the fight with Cyborg [at Invicta FC 5]. I got a call from Invicta saying, \u2018We\u2019re taking your opponent and giving her to Cris or you can fight her\u2019 and it was two-and-a-half weeks before the fight and we were like, \u2018No; that makes no sense. We\u2019re not fighting her in two weeks with zero promotion.\u2019 It wasn\u2019t a smart career move to do that in that short amount of time.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If Budd is dumb for being logical with the handling of her career then that makes about as much sense as MMA math does.<\/p>\n

The Canadian has earned her position as one of the best 145ers on the planet and isn’t afraid to fight for the No. 1 spot one day.<\/p>\n

And with Cyborg not sounding too happy with the UFC lately<\/a>…who knows, maybe it will come sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n

“Then, of course, word gets around that I said I\u2019m not fighting Cris Cyborg and you know how it goes,” Budd continued, “They gave her my opponent and we were kind of pissed off about that and I had one more fight with them and then we got an amazing offer from Bellator.<\/em><\/p>\n

Now I\u2019ve had 14 MMA fights and I\u2019ve established myself, so I\u2019m here; I\u2019m not running from anyone.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
