Regrettably, things took an incredibly ugly turn at the last minute, and the end result was Smith\u2019s release from the UFC.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble began when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/ufc-atlantic-city\/ufc-atlantic-city-weigh-in-results-two-fighters-miss-weight-one-bout-cancelled-1\/\">Ladd missed weight for the fight<\/a>, tipping the scales 1.8 pounds over the bantamweight limit. Despite this hiccup, Smith was willing to take the fight, but she wanted to hash out a new deal with the UFC first, as her bout with Ladd marked the last obligation on her current contract. Unfortunately, the UFC instead opted to buy out Smith\u2019s contract, paying the bantamweight her show and win money, and ending her UFC career on the spot&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The immediate speculation, of course, was that the UFC had grown tired of Smith\u2019s efforts to unionize fighters through Project Spearhead, an organization that aims to have the US government identify UFC fighters as employees rather than independent contractors.<\/p>\n<p>If this is indeed why the UFC terminated Smith&#8217;s contract, well, that&#8217;s a problem \u2014 which is why Smith recently filed a labor complaint against the promotion\u00a0with the National Labor Relations Board.<\/p>\n<p>If Smith&#8217;s complaint strikes you as the kind of thing that would stress out UFC President Dana White, you&#8217;re wrong. The UFC President doesn&#8217;t seem remotely phased by this development, and is intent to focus instead on <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/dana-white\/video-ufc-president-dana-white-drops-69k-on-samurai-swords-on-pawn-stars\/\">&#8220;fun shit.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently she did [file a complaint[,\u201d White said on a recent episode of the UFC Unfiltered podcast (transcribed by <a href=\"https:\/\/mmajunkie.com\/2018\/05\/dana-white-leslie-smith-labor-complaint-ufc-somebody-elses-problem-union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MMAJunkie<\/a>). \u201cI don\u2019t know that much about this to talk about it. I literally don\u2019t know anything about it. I know that she\u2019s upset and she filed something. She\u2019s suing us or filed something with somebody. I don\u2019t know. I\u2019m at a point in my life where I don\u2019t focus on that shit anymore. That\u2019s not my problem. Thats somebody else\u2019s problem.
