Max Holloway’s choice to act as Tony Ferguson’s understudy and fight Khabib Nurmagomedov on just six days notice was met with immediate praise and excitement<\/a>. Yet there is a darker side to Holloway’s accepting this short-notice fight.<\/p>\n

Even though he’s the champion of the 145-pound featherweight division, and will be afforded an extra 10 pounds to work with in this 155-pound title fight, Holloway will have to endure a massive and potentially hazardous weight cut for this bout with Nurmagomedov. In fact, his nutritionist George Lockhart says Holloway’s cut to 155 will be the tied for biggest that he’s ever been a part of.<\/p>\n

Lockhart detailed the massive task ahead in an interview with MMA Fighting<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is huge for Max and honestly this would be so easy to say, \u2018No, man, he can\u2019t do it\u2019 and it would be no stress on me,\u201d Lockhart said. \u201cBut the kid, I know he wants it. I know Max wants it. He\u2019s actually excited about this shit. He has so much weight to cut, but he was excited. It was like he had a challenge. He\u2019s just like, \u2018Let\u2019s do this\u2019 and I\u2019m like, \u2018all right.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnybody that follows us and knows what I do, this is tied for the largest weight that I\u2019ve ever done,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

With so little time to get Holloway down to 155 pounds, Lockhart is not even worrying about Holloway’s performance on fight night. His sole priority this time around is helping the featherweight champ make the weight.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always look at performance,\u201d Lockhart explained. \u201cWe want to keep performance high. During the entire camp, we\u2019re trying to make sure he\u2019s getting better, getting better, getting better. Where, at this point, it\u2019s not about performance, it\u2019s all about weight. The only time performance is gonna come into play is Saturday night. So, there\u2019s gonna be things that we\u2019re gonna do that are not gonna be great for his performance. They\u2019re gonna accelerate the fat-burning process.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s gonna have to push his body,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut it\u2019s gonna be low impact. It\u2019s not like he\u2019s gonna be sparring and grappling and stuff. His body doesn\u2019t have the ability. That would be dangerous. So we\u2019re doing low impact, but high volume.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though the challenges ahead are mountainous, Lockhart is confident Holloway will hit his mark in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI am [confident],\u201d Lockhart said. \u201cI\u2019m confident in the team, I\u2019m confident in Max. We\u2019ll do it in a healthy way and we\u2019ll make sure he\u2019s on point.\u201d<\/p>\n
