Lightweight contender Dustin Poirier has “championship language” in his new UFC contract<\/strong><\/p>\n

Surging UFC lightweight fighter Dustin Poirier will return to action in the headliner of next month’s UFC on FOX 29 event when he squares off with perennial division contender Justin Gaethje.<\/p>\n

“The Diamond” has gone 6-1 (with 1 no-contest) over his past eight fights and will be bringing a fresh new UFC contract into his main event scrap with Justin Gaethje.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with MMAJunkie’s Mike Bohn<\/a>, Poirier revealed that his new UFC deal includes “championship language” which involves a plan for when he wins the promotions coveted 155-pound strap.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just rewashed my old contract after my last fight and got a new contract,\u201d<\/em> Poirier stated. \u201cI got close to my goal. I still believe I\u2019m worth more money, but we\u2019re happy with where we\u2019re at. Me and the UFC are on good terms and like I\u2019ve said, I would fight the rest of my career in the UFC. I want to fight until I\u2019m 35. I would love to do another six years in the UFC, but as of right now I\u2019m happy, and I hope they\u2019re happy. I\u2019m going to keep putting on great shows and putting everything into my training camps. That\u2019s all I can do.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Poirier continued: <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how many contracts I\u2019ve had with the UFC, but this is my first contract with championship language in it,\u201d Poirier said. \u201cWe have a plan figured out for when I win the belt, and it\u2019s in my contract. This is my first contract with that in it, and I\u2019ve had a lot of contracts with the UFC. This is the closest I\u2019ve ever come to being a world champion, and everything is happening like clockwork like it\u2019s supposed to.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Dustin Poirier (22-5 MMA) was last seen in action at November’s UFC fight night event in Norfolk where he picked up a third-round TKO victory over former lightweight title holder Anthony Pettis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prior to that, Poirier was engaged in a thrilling fight with Eddie Alvarez that unfortunatlely ended in a no-contest after the former champ landed some illegal knees on “The Diamond”.<\/p>\n
