Veteran MMA referee and current Bellator commentator “Big” John McCarthy is becoming one of the most respected voices in MMA. As such, his opinions<\/a> on the sport’s hot-button issues are always interesting to hear.<\/p>\n

On a recent episode of MMAJunkie Radio<\/a>, the veteran referee tackled the issue of former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’s unfortunate brush with USADA. In McCarthy’s opinion, Jones probably didn’t intentionally take a performance enhancing drug, but might be a little careless when it comes to what he puts in his body.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re an athlete making the amount of money that Jon is making, you can\u2019t go to the AM-PM and buy something that\u2019s in pill form and put that in your mouth without going, \u2018What the (expletive) are you doing?\u2019 C\u2019mon, dude,\u201d McCarthy said. \u201cYou are a frickin\u2019 Ferrari. You can\u2019t do those things. You have got to be smart. And I just don\u2019t see the letting him off with, \u2018Oh, it was just a mistake,\u2019 because he\u2019s had that mistake before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI love Jon Jones,\u201d McCarthy continued later. \u201cI say he\u2019s the greatest MMA fighter I\u2019ve ever seen. But this is where the problem comes forward. I don\u2019t personally believe Jon took some type of steroid before fighting Daniel Cormier… But Jon is personally responsible as a professional athlete under contract with the UFC… with everything he puts in his body. And I believe that Jon is taking \u2013 or allowing things that are not known or not tested \u2013 and because some other trace element is in there that makes you pop, you\u2019re responsible for it.”<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he took the lie-detector test, I believe that Jon didn\u2019t knowingly take a pill or take a shot or injection for that steroid, but I do believe he\u2019s taking things, or allowing himself to ingest things that, for whatever reason, that sometimes contain these things, because he\u2019s taking them from places that there is no quality assurance.\u201d<\/p>\n
