In the pre-fight promotion for this bout, Ngannou was sold as an unparalleled force of destruction, an unstoppable behemoth, the second coming of Mike Tyson. And yet in the end, he looked about as human as a professional cage fighter can look: out of breath, bewildered, bruised, beaten.<\/p>\n<p>While UFC color commentator Joe Rogan was one of the biggest contributors to Francis Ngannou&#8217;s massive pre-fight hype, he is now saying that he&#8217;s heard Ngannou didn&#8217;t even train grappling ahead of UFC 220. Rogan made this claim on the Monday episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ec4OKbrCl3I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The JRE MMA Show Podcast.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore, everyone was saying, \u2018Oh my God, he\u2019s in tremendous shape, everything is amazing,&#8217;\u201d Rogan said (transcribed by <a href=\"http:\/\/mmajunkie.com\/2018\/01\/francis-ngannou-train-grappling-ufc-220-title-fight-joe-rogan-stipe-miocic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MMAJunkie.com<\/a>). \u201cThen afterwards it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, he doesn\u2019t train on the ground.\u2019 What? He doesn\u2019t train on the ground? They go, \u2018All he wants to do is strike.\u2019 You can\u2019t let him do that. You can\u2019t let him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s going to fight a Division-1 wrestler,\u201d he continued. \u201cHow is he going to do this? How is going to stand up? He has, after all, repeatedly referred to his loss to Miocic as<a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/francis-ngannou\/francis-ngannou-explained-learned-loss-stipe-miocic-1\/\"> the greatest learning experience of his career thus far<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been in this sport only four years, and I know I\u2019ll keep learning and improving,\u201d Ngannou said at the UFC 220 post-fight press conference. \u201cWhat happened tonight was the last step for me to learn about this sport, because it\u2019s the only thing I\u2019ve never faced \u2013 a five-round fight, and how to deal with it. I made a mistake, and that will not happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came here today to win the fight,\u201d he continued. \u201cI just discovered a new part [of the game] that I was ignorant about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is I underestimated my opponent, and I went too hard in the first round, and he was tougher than I thought.
