Last week, the MMA world was hit with the news that Bellator MMA had parted ways<\/a> with long-time color commentator Jimmy Smith. Given that Smith is a bottomless pit of MMA knowledge with charisma to boot, this news came as a definite surprise. Apparently, however, the broadcaster’s departure from Bellator was quite amicable.<\/p>\n

Jimmy Smith broke down his Bellator exit on a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience MMA Show<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a Bellator thing,\u201d said Smith (h\/t MMAFighting.com<\/a>). \u201cThey were great to work with. They were great about the whole break up thing. What happened was, I had a deal with an option year and 2018 was my option year and when I was in Verona, New York doing the Verona show, my boss sat me down and said, \u2018We\u2019re not gonna renew 2018, we want a different deal.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they come to you and say they want a different deal, it\u2019s never… when you\u2019re girlfriend comes to you and says she wants to talk it\u2019s never, \u2018I don\u2019t give enough bl**jobs.\u2019 They never say that. It\u2019s always bad. It\u2019s always bad.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that was it. When they were like, \u2018We want to change the deal around,\u2019 I was like, \u2018Okay,\u2019 and they did make an honest effort to keep me. They really tried, but they just didn\u2019t make an offer that was worth me coming back. That was pretty much the deal so it\u2019s kind of comparatively amicable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Rogan also claimed that he encouraged UFC President Dana White to hire Jimmy Smith several years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI called Dana White about you, how many years ago, like four?\u201d said Rogan. \u201cI tried to get Jimmy Smith hired by the UFC four years ago. I was like, \u2018Dude, you want better people, you want more people? Hire that f*cking guy. He knows what he\u2019s doing, he\u2019s excited, and he loves the sport. I was telling him you\u2019re a great guy, he\u2019s genuine, he\u2019s a real fan and he\u2019s f*cking good at it. Go get him.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou f**ked up, Bellator,\u201d Rogan added. \u201cYou f**cked up. I\u2019ve been telling everybody that Jimmy Smith\u2019s the best out there and you let him go. That\u2019s a huge error on their part. I would be thrilled if somehow or another they were able to work it out where Jimmy Smith was at the UFC. That would be what I would like to see.\u201d<\/p>\n
