There is no doubt that fighting Conor McGregor<\/a> is the golden ticket in the UFC, especially if you can beat the Irishman.<\/p>\n

However, Kevin Lee is playing his cards in an interesting way saying that if he wins the interim title fight against Tony Ferguson at UFC 216<\/a>, “The Notorious” will have to “prove” to him that he is ready for the title unification challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it already is for the real championship,\u201d Lee said of his UFC 216 fight with Tony Ferguson at the UFC 216 media event (via Dave Doyle for MMA Fighting<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u201cAs far as I\u2019m concerned the man has lost three of his last four fights,\u201d Lee said of McGregor, who holds the undisputed UFC lightweight title. \u201cI don\u2019t even think beat Nate Diaz<\/a> the second time. I like a big challenge, so he\u2019s gotta show me a little bit. He\u2019s a small dude, too, he\u2019s 145. He was getting out-wrestled by a dude who\u2019s 40 years old and a boxer. He was getting him in the clinches and out-wrestling him. I mean, he was, he\u2019s gotta show a little bit more than that to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo after this one, maybe I might give him a shot at the title,\u201d Lee continued. \u201cMaybe, I don\u2019t know. We\u2019ll see how he kind of reacts. Maybe he should fight Nate again and prove that he can fight me.\u201d <\/p>\n

\"UFC<\/a><\/p>\n

Lee said he is doing the real work in the lightweight division by taking on Ferguson, who is on a nine-fight winning streak. Interestingly, Lee said no other contenders in the division were open to meeting “El Cucuy” in the Octagon except for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean it will be on my terms,\u201d Lee said. \u201cIt will be on my timetable. You know, I\u2019m expecting to take this fight. I\u2019m doing the hard work. I\u2019m doing the heavy lifting. I\u2019m fighting Tony. Nobody wanted to fight Tony. Conor didn\u2019t want to fight Tony. It will be on my timetable, I\u2019ll tell him when we gonna fight. If we fight on St. Patrick\u2019s Day<\/a>? Maybe. That might make some good business so I don\u2019t know, I\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n
