Last weekend, in the main event of the UFC’s latest trip to Glasgow, Scotland, Argentina’s Santiago Ponzinibbio authored an epic, first-round knockout of longtime Icelandic contender Gunnar Nelson. Unfortunately, many fans \u2013 and Nelson \u2013 felt that Ponzinibbio’s win was spurred on by multiple, inadvertent eye-pokes<\/a>. On the latest episode of BJ Penn Radio<\/a>, top UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal shared the dramatic, negative effects of eye pokes, and why the rules surrounding inadvertent eye-pokes needs to change.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019ve ever been poked in the eye, man, it sucks,\u201d he said. \u201cIt sucks in practice, and it sucks even more in the fight. Depending how hard you get poked, you can man up and keep going \u2013I\u2019ve done things like that \u2013 but your vision is off. One eye is swollen at the time. For some reason, you\u2019re getting that blurred double vision, because one eye is at a different focus than the other eye that didn\u2019t get poked. That takes time [to recover from]. That\u2019s not like, oh a second later, because the doctor looked at it and you said you\u2019re ok. We\u2019re only saying we\u2019re ok because we\u2019re fighters.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Masvidal then assured that the procedures surrounding inadvertent eye-pokes need to change:<\/p>\n

“There needs to be a legitimate rule, if anybody touches the eye, well I should be able to get five to ten minutes,” he said. “The most important thing in the fight is vision. If I can\u2019t see, well I\u2019m going to get beat up, you know? It\u2019s crazy. They need to do that. They need to stay on top of that. I don\u2019t understand what the big nonsense is.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s BS. When I fought Larkin, he gave me a pretty hard eye-poke. I had to stop. The doctor came in, and asked \u2018can you see?\u2019 [I said] \u2018Yeah, I can see,\u2019 but I really couldn\u2019t see at that time that he asked me. I had a big blur in my vision. But of course if I say I can\u2019t see, I\u2019m not fighting. So, I can\u2019t see, and the doctors were like \u2018ok let\u2019s go fight.\u2019 What do you mean \u2018let\u2019s go fight?\u2019 Give me my fucking time. It\u2019s not like I poked myself in the eye. What\u2019s fair is to let me heal up. Let me say when my eye is ready. But they don\u2019t do that. I think I had about 15 seconds, something like that, 20 seconds.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something that they need to work on dramatically.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
