The unfortunate thing is that, while Lee\u2019s rear-naked choke was deep, Chiesa never actually tapped out or lost consciousness. Instead, referee Mario Yamasaki misread the situation, and stopped the fight early.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Yamasaki has received a good deal of criticism, as everyone from <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/michael-chiesa\/video-michael-chiesa-slams-mario-yamasaki-demands-rematch-kevin-lee\/\">Chiesa<\/a> to UFC President <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/dana-white\/dana-white-blasts-12-year-old-girl-mario-yamasaki-early-stoppage-lee-vs-chiesa-fight\/\">Dana White<\/a> has shared their distaste for his officiating.<\/p>\n<p>Now, veteran referee Big John McCarthy \u2013 probably the most respected referee in the game \u2013 weighed in on Yamasaki&#8217;s blunder. Surprisingly, McCarthy seems to be leaning in the direction of Team Yamasaki on this one, as he suggested Chiesa wasn&#8217;t adequately defending himself.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What is unfortunate is that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MoTownPhenom\">@MoTownPhenom<\/a> was booed for a phenomenal performance. That choke was TIGHT &amp; was not being defended <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AskBJM?src=hash\">#AskBJM<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9OHHeNyuhQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/9OHHeNyuhQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Big John McCarthy (@JohnMcCarthyMMA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnMcCarthyMMA\/status\/879242813417734146\">June 26, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;What is unfortunate is that [Kevin Lee] was booed for a phenomenal performance,&#8221; McCarthy said when asked for his opinion on the stoppage by a fan. &#8220;That choke was TIGHT &amp; was not being defended.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While McCarthy claims the fight was not being defended, Chiesa has assured he was just fine, despite the tightness of the choke.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe second I saw [Yamasaki] coming in, I instantly knew,\u201d Chiesa said during the FS1 post-fight show. \u201cThe guy has a reputation for poor officiating.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Everybody knows I\u2019ve fought the best blackbelts in my division. Jim Miller, Joe Lauzon, Beneil Dariush, all these guys have taken my back in the first round. I always get out, and I always win. You robbed me. So I think it\u2019s only right that me and my team, we go back, we go to the commission and do what we can to get this overturned. And I\u2019m going to look to get a rematch. I\u2019ll fight him in Detroit, I\u2019ll fight him in December, I\u2019ll fight him right now.
