Now that Holly Holm<\/a> has returned to bantamweight and Germaine de Randamie seems poised to do the same, the UFC’s new women’s featherweight division comes down to two fighters: Cris “Cyborg” Justino and Megan Anderson, who will battle for gold in the co-main event of UFC 214<\/a> this July 29.<\/p>\n

Two fighters, of course, is not enough for a healthy division. In order to maximize the potential of its new women’s featherweight division, the UFC will need to sign many more female featherweights. Strangely, however, the promotion has seemed very hesitant to do so.<\/p>\n

Many fans have suggested this is because there is simply not enough female featherweight talent out there for the UFC to harvest. According to Anderson, however, this is not the case.<\/p>\n

Speaking to BJPenn.com, the upcoming UFC title challenger explained that the UFC should handle its new featherweight division the same way it handled its now well-established strawweight division.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have 3-0 strawweights in the UFC \u2013 you can have 3-0 featherweights in the UFC,” Anderson said. “Why is it any different? Just because there are maybe fewer girls? You have girls in the UFC [in the strawweight division] who haven\u2019t even had five pro fights yet. There are featherweights out there who have had a similar amount of fights or more. The depth is there. You can\u2019t say that myself or someone like Charmaine Tweet isn\u2019t deserving of a UFC contract over someone who\u2019s had two fights.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI think they should sign as many featherweights as they can, regardless of of their record,\u201d she said. \u201cYou need fighters in a division. Why not sign them all like you did with strawweights?\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
