Conor McGregor<\/a> is the biggest star in mixed martial arts<\/a>. In fact, he’s probably the biggest star in combat sports outright. As such, you’d assume that most MMA promotions would absolutely\u00a0love\u00a0<\/em>to make him a part of their roster.<\/p>\n

While this might be true for most promotions, it is not the case for Singapore-based ONE Championship.<\/p>\n

In the past, ONE Championship President Victor Cui has explained that his focus is on building fighters that Asian fans can relate to and admire, and fighters that embody the traditional values of martial arts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with MMAFighting.com<\/a>, he elaborated on this, explaining that many of ONE’s fans have a difficult time stomaching the bravado and machismo present in fighters like McGregor.<\/p>\n

Cui used his promotion’s previous signing of “The New York Bad Ass” Phil Baroni as an example.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were not connecting with Baroni,\u201d Cui said. \u201cI thought that they would, but it made them hate our brand more. They didn\u2019t appreciate it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\"One<\/p>\n

Cui then explained that McGregor \u2013 who infamously engaged in a press conference water bottle throwing battle with Nate Diaz in 2016 \u2013 would be a liability in some of the countries where ONE promotes events.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s say we had a press conference in China and he threw a water bottle,\u201d Cui said. \u201cI would go to jail. They\u2019d put me in jail. I\u2019m not kidding around.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the shows in China, I meet with the government officials and they have a checklist,\u201d Cui said. \u201cDid we play this song, did we play this song? If you played one extra song, they can throw me in jail and they\u2019ve done that to other concert promoters.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Cui then added that even Ben Askren, one of ONE’s top stars, has gotten mixed reactions from the Asian fans. Conor McGregor, then, would probably be received the same way.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter [Askren] won [a recent fight], he stood in the cage and he didn\u2019t say anything really cocky by any standard,\u201d Cui said. \u201cI think he said something to the effect of, \u2018I\u2019m the best in the world and I\u2019ll fight anyone.\u2019 And the entire stadium booed him. They just thought that was too arrogant. Like, you just won, why do you feel the need to brag about yourself? This was in Singapore, and I was surprised about that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cA big part of what drives the spirit of ONE Championship is really just the belief that martial arts makes the world a better place,\u201d Cui said. \u201cOf course want it to be successful business, of course we want to continue to grow in a successful business enterprise. That philosophy of we\u2019re making the world a better place permeates throughout the entire organization. I think it\u2019s something our fans really appreciate in Asia.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
