Recently, at UFC 210, former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman stepped into the Octagon with Gegard Mousasi in hopes of snapping a 2-fight skid and returning to the win column. After going undefeated throughout his professional career, which included winning the UFC middleweight title, Weidman dropped back to back losses<\/a> to Luke Rockhold and Yoel Romero.<\/p>\n

While Weidman hoped to return to title contention with a win over Mousasi, it was Mousasi who walked away with the win, picking up a TKO win<\/a> after Weidman was declared TKOd by referee Dan Miragliotta in what turned out to be an extremely controversial incident.<\/p>\n

\"Chris<\/p>\n

Now, veteran referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy has given his expert opinion on the situation to MMAJunkie<\/a>, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat everybody\u2019s not looking at is, they all look and say, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s unfair to Chris Weidman,’\u201d McCarthy told MMAjunkie Radio. \u201cIn a way, it kind of is to a point. But no, it\u2019s unfair to Gegard Mousasi. Mousasi is the guy that got screwed over, except for the ending. Because Mousasi does things that are all legal for him to do, and he hurts \u2013 we\u2019ll say \u2013 Chris, because Chris is going to say, \u2018I\u2019m hurt.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd if you\u2019re going to say, \u2018I\u2019m hurt,\u2019 I\u2019m going to say, \u2018OK, you\u2019re hurt.\u2019 He did it legally. And now they\u2019re taking him away from you to hurt you more, and giving you time to recover from something that was legal. That\u2019s bad. That\u2019s the bad part.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He continued, discussing the new rule, which changes the definition of a ‘grounded fighter’:<\/p>\n

\"Chris<\/p>\n

“In that situation, we want (to say), \u2018Chris Weidman, put your knee to the ground. Use your hands to defend yourself. That\u2019s what they\u2019re there for.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rule has been working beautifully everywhere. It\u2019s hard for athletic commission people to understand, because how many fights do they do? But I do fights every week, multiple times a week, everywhere. And it\u2019s been freaking awesome. We\u2019ve gotten guys to get away from doing this stupid thing of putting one hand down and thinking they\u2019re safe. It\u2019s changed what they\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
