This time around, <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/videos\/video-bj-penn-gives-first-update-following-dennis-siver-fight-booking\/\">he&#8217;ll be taking on Russian-born German Dennis Siver<\/a> in a compelling featherweight battle.<\/p>\n<p>In advance of this anticipated showdown, Penn has enlisted the help of an old friend who many of his long-time fans will remember: Gary Marinovich. Marinovich, along with his brother Marv, was one half of\u00a0Marinovich Training Systems, an innovative strength and conditioning program that\u00a0helped carry Penn to his unforgettable defeats of Diego Sanchez and <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/kenny-florian\/kenny-florian-liked-rematch-bj-penn\/\">Kenny Florian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the most recent episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qmJfcOSmyvw&amp;feature=youtu.be\">The Luke Thomas Show<\/a>, Marinovich joined host Luke Thomas to discuss his reunion with Penn. Apparently, it all began with a phone call.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI got a call from BJ about a week ago, and he asked if I would come over and work with him, and I jumped at the chance because BJ is a special athlete and a special person,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He then explained that he&#8217;ll be working with Penn for the duration of his preparations for Siver.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI\u2019ll be here for the duration [of BJ\u2019s camp]. BJ has put his fate in our hands, or in my hands, and I\u2019m going to make sure the job gets done. So I\u2019ll be here for the duration \u2013 close to three months.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Marinovich also gave his take on why Penn reached out to him, and what his goals are for the former two-division champion:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI think that BJ realized that typical, traditional training wasn\u2019t getting the job done,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen we worked with BJ \u2013 it\u2019s almost been six years now I think \u2013 BJ had great success and so he decided to call us. Marv has since retired, so I\u2019m carrying the banner.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do here is bring back the old greatness that he had.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gary Marinovich: I&#039;m Going to &#039;Get Back the Old B.J. Penn&#039;\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qmJfcOSmyvw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On the show, Marinovich also detailed his unique approach to strength and conditioning training, and how it differs from traditional weight training.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cTypical weight training, what it does is it works the maximal movement of muscular movement,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;What we do is we generate an elastic energy, and with that elastic energy it gives a tremendous boost to what\u2019s call concentric action.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe improve muscular speed and explosiveness by using that elastic energy,&#8221; he continued.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe develop muscle that moves the entire body. We\u2019re using all the muscles, rather than just the major muscles. When you use the major muscles only, it\u2019s going to put the body out of equilibrium and it\u2019s not going to perform like it would if you were using the micro-muscles.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, Marinovich explained that, while Penn is a little older than he was when they first trained together, the approach to training will not be all that different.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cBecause BJ Penn is a superior athlete \u2013 he hasn\u2019t been demonstrating that of late \u2013 I\u2019m going to take things a little slower going into it, but ultimately we\u2019re going to do things with the same intensity, with the same duration and so forth,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We\u2019re not going to baby him.
