On Christmas Eve, it was announced that an injured Cain Velasquez would not be licensed for his UFC 207 rematch with Fabricio Werdum<\/a>. This, of course, left Werdum without an opponent for the quickly approaching card.<\/p>\n

Shortly after this unfortunate news broke, several of the game’s top heavyweights threw their names in the hat, hoping to be chosen as Werdum’s last-minute replacement opponent. One such heavyweight was former champ Junior Dos Santos<\/a>, who knocked Werdum out in his UFC debut back in 2008.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the UFC was not able to put this Werdum-Dos Santos rematch together on such short notice, and Werdum was pulled from the card. According to Dos Santos, this is because Werdum turned the fight down.<\/p>\n

In an interview with MMAFighting.com<\/a>, Werdum refuted Dos Santos’ claim, blasting him with a homophobic rant. While Werdum assured that he has ‘nothing against gays,’ his statements were\u00a0undeniably off-color and are likely to land him in some hot water.<\/p>\n

His words:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat \u2018Cigano\u2019 said was a bit weird,\u201d Werdum said. \u201c\u2018Cigano\u2019 has been chasing me for a long time. You usually go after the belt, not a fighter. I think that\u2019s weird. I wasn\u2019t offered this [fight]. He\u2019s saying I turned it down. I\u2019d fight him just to end this story of him chasing me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSome people think he\u2019s jealous because I became champion [by] beating his \u2018dad\u2019 Cain Velasquez, but I don\u2019t think that\u2019s the case,\u201d Werdum continued. \u201cI think he didn\u2019t come out of the closet yet. I don\u2019t have anything against homosexuals, but \u2018Cigano\u2019 needs to get out of the closet. He must have something because he won\u2019t forget me. I already told him I\u2019m married. Nothing against gays, but everyone does their own thing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As a competitor in a promotion that recently crowned its first openly gay champion in Amanda Nunes<\/a>, Werdum’s words are extremely off-putting. What repercussions await him \u2013 if any \u2013 remains to be seen.<\/p>\n
