This week, news surfaced that Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg had failed a random out-of-competition drug test on December 5th,<\/a> and was potentially in violation of USADA’s anti-doping policy.<\/p>\n

The UFC was quick to release a statement on the matter, which was ultimately followed up by a statement from Cyborg herself on social media<\/a>, in which she explained that the failure was the result of a prescription, not a performance enhancing drug:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor my fans who are disappointed in the news, I am sorry.<\/p>\n

You can feel confident that the substance they are inquiring about is not for performance enhancing use, and is needed for my specific treatments. Now, Cyborg’s rep, Ray Elbe, has taken to The UnderGround<\/a> to shed some light on the matter, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cNot for a steroid, and she has a prescription as part of the post fight therapy she\u2019s been receiving due to the severe weight cut,\u201d Justino rep Ray Elbe wrote on the popular MMA message board The Underground. \u201cThis has been known for a few days, and Cris\u2019 doctor has been in direct contact with USADA turning over all the necessary patient files to document the reasons Cris needs the medication.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCris had issues with her kidneys and blood pressure, and that\u2019s part of a prescription she\u2019s been seeking for therapy,\u201d Elbe wrote. \u201cCris doctor works with several Olympic and UFC athletes who are also under USADA testing and this was part of the treatment given to her the Monday after the weigh-ins.<\/p>\n

\u201cCris has not misused the prescription and has been assisting USADA with every request. I\u2019m not a doctor, and so I don\u2019t know the specifics of the prescription and the treatment purpose of each ingredient, but this treatment process is the reason Cris turned down a fight Feb. 11, as her doctor said the three cuts in eight months were damaging her body.<\/p>\n

\u201cI suspect her doctor (will) speak to the media about the specifics eventually.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
