Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum made headlines recently when he took to social media with a photo of himself wearing a ‘Nike Fight Kit’<\/a> rather than a Reebok fight kit. The post was an obvious dig at Reebok, who the UFC currently has an apparel deal with.<\/p>\n

The post was a controversial one, however, Werdum explained his intentions later in the evening in a separate social media post<\/a>, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cI was protesting. Actually, I\u2019m not forced to use Reebok. I don\u2019t have a contract with them. For people that don\u2019t know, Reebok sponsors, well, sponsors, only during the fight and in the fight week you have to wear it [Reebok gear], it\u2019s in the contract. In reality, I don\u2019t have a deal with them to post outside the UFC. I can post whatever I want, if I want to post Kings MMA, I\u2019ll post. If I want to post Nike or any other company or the sponsors I have, anything, so I\u2019m not obligated.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"Former<\/a><\/p>\n

Now, ‘Vai Calvao’ has opened up on the situation further in an interview with MMAJunkie<\/a>, in which he revealed that he is actually in negotiations with Nike, after his money from sponsors was cut with the UFC’s apparel deal with Reebok.<\/p>\n

“(Nike and I) are negotiating, it\u2019s going to happen \u2013 we\u2019ll see if it happens, it depends on figures, it depends on a lot of things,” Werdum said. “We might close (the deal), we might not. But, I went ahead because I\u2019m not happy with Reebok. I\u2019m not happy because making $5,000 per fight sucks. For a person who made $100,000, $150,000 per fight, going to $5,000, it\u2019s not easy. It was more a protest, but I\u2019m already negotiating with Nike.”<\/p>\n

“I also wanted to say that it\u2019s important that other sponsors know that \u2013 sometimes other big sponsors don\u2019t come to you because they think you have exclusivity with Reebok,” Werdum said. “I have no exclusivity with Reebok, it\u2019s only during the fight and that\u2019s it. Because that\u2019s how it goes and we can\u2019t do anything about it. But outside of the octagon, that\u2019s where things show up the most, at social media, that\u2019s where they show the brand, at training. It\u2019s nice to clarify that, outside the UFC, I can have the sponsors I want.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
