{"id":203207,"date":"2016-09-05T12:01:54","date_gmt":"2016-09-05T19:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/?p=203207"},"modified":"2016-09-05T12:01:54","modified_gmt":"2016-09-05T19:01:54","slug":"video-prisoners-organize-insane-fight-club-style-matches-jail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/videos\/video-prisoners-organize-insane-fight-club-style-matches-jail\/","title":{"rendered":"VIDEO | Prisoners organize insane &#8216;Fight Club&#8217; style matches in jail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mt Eden Prison Fight Club\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MFTOSTkKce0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Prisoners at the Mt Eden Corrections Facility in Auckland, New Zealand have found out a <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/nate-diaz\/nate-diaz-definitely-moving-needle-video-goes-viral\/\">way to go viral<\/a>, despite being behind bars.<\/p>\n<p>Insane footage captured on contraband cell phones caught the &#8220;Fight Club&#8221; style fights taking place in the facility and were uploaded to YouTube in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>People are seen watching the fights go down in a small area where some members exchange in a physical fight.<\/p>\n<p>University of Canterbury Criminologist Professor Greg Newbold said in a report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvnz.co.nz\/one-news\/new-zealand\/exclusive-secret-gang-fight-club-at-mt-eden-prison-revealed-q01845\" target=\"_blank\">One News Now<\/a> that the footage was, &#8220;shocking, disgraceful, unforgiveable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s bloody bad news and it should never happen,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The worst thing is this whole thing happened uninterrupted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Newbold added, &#8220;It shows management breakdown, when inmates can stage these types of events without any knowledge of the staff, or any intervention, it shows the staff aren&#8217;t doing their jobs and ultimately the responsibility lies with management.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Serco is the UK firm contracted by the Department of Corrections to run the facility. According to a recent report by <a href=\"http:\/\/m.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/news\/article.cfm?c_id=1&#038;objectid=11692482\" target=\"_blank\">NZ Herald<\/a>, &#8220;The Department of Corrections invoked a &#8216;stepping in&#8217; clause in Serco&#8217;s contract in July last year and in December confirmed the British-based company&#8217;s contract would not be renewed at a break point in March.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have always accepted the recommendations of the report, but brought the proceeding because we had genuine concerns about the process,&#8221;  Serco chief executive Mark Irwin said of the High Court&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have acknowledged that under our management, following a period of good performance, standards in Mt Eden slipped in early 2015, and we have apologised for this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All prisons have to deal with challenges, and we are grateful for the partnership of the Department as we work together to address them,&#8221; Irwin added.<\/p>\n<p>According to the NZ Herald report, &#8220;the Government announced it has charged Serco $8 million to cover the costs of resuming control of the prison.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prisoners at the Mt Eden Corrections Facility in Auckland, New Zealand have found out a way to go viral, despite being behind bars.
