Saori was the three-time defending Olympic champion and had won 13 consecutive world championships prior to her match with Maroulis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve dreamed of this my whole life,&#8221; Maroulis said in a report by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/olympics\/rio-2016\/2016\/08\/18\/usa-helen-maroulis-wins-gold-freestyle-wrestling-53kg\/88963624\/\" target=\"_blank\">USA Today<\/a>. &#8220;I put it on this pedestal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With her first time competing in the <a href=\"http:\/\/staging.tcpcharms.com\/bjpenn\/mma-news\/olympics\/rio-2016-olympic-wrestler-gets-choked-unconscious-yet-manages-win-gold\/\">Olympics<\/a>, Maroulis made her dreams come true after seemingly endless amounts of hard work and discipline. The 24-year-old says she sacrificed a lot in order to compete in the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn\u2019t go celebrate (at Christmas) with extended family,\u201d she said. \u201cI had to sacrifice a lot of social time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Maroulis made her dreams come true against a legendary opponent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been dreaming about wrestling Saori for so long,&#8221; Maroulis said. &#8220;She&#8217;s a hero. She&#8217;s the most decorated wrestler in the sport.
