In a very insightful and some what troubling report, it has been revealed that Floyd Mayweather Jr. used an IV after weigh-ins and before his fight with Manny Pacquiao. The issue? Under the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), the use of an IV is banned.<\/p>\n

As you might know, this will be the case for UFC fighters coming up in October, but was already in place for boxing. IV’s can be used to mask\u00a0banned substances, such as performance-enhancing drugs.<\/p>\n

The report, by SB Nation’s Thomas Hauser<\/a>, stated that USADA went to Mayweather’s house after the weigh-ins and found evidence of an IV being administered. This was the day before the fight.<\/p>\n

The collection agents found evidence of an IV being administered to Mayweather. Bob Bennett, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which had jurisdiction over the fight, says that USADA did not tell the commission whether the IV was actually being administered when the agents arrived. USADA did later advise the NSAC that Mayweather\u2019s medical team told its agents that the IV was administered to address concerns related to dehydration.<\/em><\/p>\n

The troubling part is that the report goes on to show how Mayweather and USADA are, lets just say, good pals.<\/p>\n

As previously noted, the weigh-in and IV administration occurred on May 1. The fight was on May 2. For 20 days after the IV was administered, USADA chose not to notify the Nevada State Athletic Commission about the procedure.<\/em><\/p>\n

Finally, on May 21, USADA sent a letter to Francisco Aguilar and Bob Bennett (respectively, the chairman and executive director of the NSAC) with a copy to Top Rank (Pacquiao\u2019s promoter) informing them that a retroactive therapeutic use exemption had been granted to Mayweather. The letter did not say when the request for the retroactive TUE was made by Mayweather or when it was granted by USADA.<\/em><\/p>\n

Subsequent correspondence in response to requests by the NSAC and Top Rank for further information revealed that the TUE was not applied for until May 19 and was granted on May 20.<\/em><\/p>\n

So basically, he took the IV, USADA knew he took the IV, they didn’t tell the NSAC and granted him an\u00a0exemption\u00a0after the fight.<\/p>\n
