UFC and Bellator veteran Chris Saunders will step into the cage against Brandon Morris in a lightweight title eliminator bout tomorrow, Friday, June 26 that will also serve as the main event\u00a0at BAMMA USA: Badbeat 16<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The bout is a quick turnaround from Saunders’\u00a0fight in April, and forces him to miss Ramadan for the sake of training camp.\u00a0 Saunders, however, feels it will be worth the sacrifice.<\/p>\n

Keith Harmon:\u00a0 I noticed you\u2019re making a quick turnaround.\u00a0 You last fought in April.\u00a0 Any particular reason for the quick return?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chris Saunders:\u00a0 I like it.\u00a0 When I first started my career I was always being active and that\u2019s what made me comfortable.<\/p>\n

When I was on The Ultimate Fighter<\/em>, all the fights started to slow down and it was really hard to get fights.\u00a0 I\u2019m really happy that I turned around right away and got back in the gym.\u00a0 The only bad thing is that I\u2019m not doing Ramadan this year.\u00a0 It would be too hard to be fasting and training right now.\u00a0 That\u2019s the only downside of having to get back into the gym.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve talked to my friends and family and they told me not to fast because my chances of winning would go down, so that\u2019s the best thing for me.\u00a0 I\u2019m still making my prayers, and I know everything is going to be okay.<\/p>\n

KH:\u00a0 In a prior interview you talked about Dutch style Kickboxing.\u00a0 What\u2019s the difference between that and other forms of Kickboxing?<\/strong><\/p>\n

CS:\u00a0 The Dutch style is very much a part of my blood.\u00a0 My family is Dutch and Moroccan.\u00a0 My brother and I train that style.\u00a0 The difference is that we both have our gloves and shin guards on.\u00a0 What it looks like to the (naked) eye is sparring, but it\u2019s not.\u00a0 When you throw a low kick, you\u2019re actually kicking, and when you hit a combination, he throws the same one back at you.\u00a0 It\u2019s more effective than say Muay Thai where you have to hold the mitts for someone, and then you do a round and then it\u2019s your turn.\u00a0 It\u2019s very slow.\u00a0 With the Dutch style, you\u2019re actually making contact with the body the entire time.\u00a0 It\u2019s really tough, but it makes you tougher for the fight.<\/p>\n

KH:\u00a0 You said people should find a good gym that fits them when they start out.\u00a0 How has The Sweat Shop helped you progress?<\/strong><\/p>\n

CS:\u00a0 The fact that I have my brother there teaching classes – you know holding the mitts for me, he\u2019s there to correct me, and I feel that\u2019s important to me.<\/p>\n

At big gyms, you don\u2019t get the time you need because there are so many other guys there.\u00a0 That\u2019s something that happens in fighting and some people deal with it better than others.\u00a0 From what I\u2019ve seen from going gym to gym is that people get neglected.\u00a0 I bring in people who have trained at other gyms.\u00a0 I\u2019ve brought in taller guys.\u00a0 Morris is 6 feet. \u00a0I\u2019m 5\u20198,\u201d maybe 5\u20199\u201d on a good day.\u00a0 I\u2019ve brought in guys who are taller than him and I pretty much have free range to bring a person in for a specific (task).<\/p>\n

KH:\u00a0 You said BAMMA feels like home.\u00a0 Could you elaborate on that a bit more?<\/strong><\/p>\n

CS:\u00a0 The fact that they treated me so good from the beginning.\u00a0 It\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve had contact throughout an entire fight camp.\u00a0 They\u2019d check up on me and see how I was doing.\u00a0 Other fight promotions wouldn\u2019t do that.<\/p>\n

With interviews, it felt like being in the UFC and being on TUF.\u00a0 It felt like a bigger promotion.\u00a0 I really felt like for the first time in a long time, it\u2019s \u2018Worry about the fight, we have everything else.\u2019\u00a0 That makes a big difference.<\/p>\n

Also, in the backroom they have big mats there to warm up.\u00a0 So you\u2019re not warming up in the dirt, and they have a nice big room.\u00a0 You\u2019re able to watch the fights in the back room; it\u2019s entertaining.<\/p>\n

No other, smaller promotions do that.\u00a0 Even when I fought for Bellator, I wasn\u2019t able to watch the fights in the back.\u00a0 I was only able to do that in the UFC.\u00a0 It feels like home since they\u2019re so good to me.<\/p>\n

The owner, Brett (Roberts), was able to get me a sponsorship with CNP Performance, which makes great stuff, and he brought it to my house.\u00a0 I mean who else does that?\u00a0 I\u2019m sure I\u2019m not the only person that\u2019s been taken care of like that.\u00a0 It\u2019s a good feeling knowing these guys have your back and they want you to do well.<\/p>\n

KH:\u00a0 What was the experience of being on the live version of The Ultimate Fighter<\/em> like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

CS:\u00a0 It was an amazing experience.\u00a0 I learned a lot of things; some things that I thought I had down, like weight cutting.\u00a0 The best weight cuts I\u2019ve had, (have been) since then.\u00a0 Better eating habits and so many smart things to do with training.<\/p>\n

If you look at my last two fights, I won both with guillotine chokes.\u00a0 When you\u2019re training with Team Alpha Male and Urijah Faber, it only added to my game.\u00a0 I learned a lot, and being able to pass it on to other people is a plus.<\/p>\n

KH:\u00a0 You\u2019re fighting Brandon Morris.\u00a0 What are your thoughts on him as an opponent?<\/strong><\/p>\n

CS:\u00a0 I think he\u2019s a scrappy guy.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think he can be on my level.\u00a0 He\u2019s 3-2 and, with this one, it\u2019s hard to judge.<\/p>\n

The thing you have to respect is that he comes from a big camp.\u00a0 He comes from Team Quest with Dan Henderson, a big legend.\u00a0 You know he\u2019s in there with top guys day in and day out.\u00a0 Am I going to scare him?\u00a0 I don\u2019t think so.\u00a0 I have to go out there and do my thing and put it on him.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think my name or how many fights I have, is going to scare him.\u00a0 I\u2019m just going to have go into the ring and do my thing.<\/p>\n

KH:\u00a0 How has social media helped your visibility?<\/strong><\/p>\n

CS:\u00a0 I think that the biggest thing is Instagram because you can post your pictures, and everyone sees what you\u2019re doing and your day-to-day life.\u00a0 I\u2019m a regular guy. \u00a0I\u2019m not going to post stupid things on there.\u00a0 I\u2019m a normal guy who just likes fighting.\u00a0 People respect that it if you\u2019re a humble down to earth guy, and (can see) that (online).\u00a0 That helps out a lot.<\/p>\n

KH:\u00a0 You said you enjoy hockey.\u00a0 What are some of your thoughts on the Stanley Cup?<\/strong><\/p>\n

CS:\u00a0 I could give a (expletive) about the Stanley Cup.\u00a0 My Montreal Canadians were out so I didn\u2019t give a (expletive).\u00a0 I stopped watching after we got our asses kicked by Tampa Bay.\u00a0 I was over it.\u00a0 I love hockey.\u00a0 I was actually playing it until my last fight, and they won the championship. So they didn\u2019t even need me.\u00a0 I love hockey and love watching kickboxing.\u00a0 I love Glory.\u00a0 If I had to choose between MMA, Boxing, and kickboxing to watch, I would choose kickboxing.\u00a0 It\u2019s the purest form of martial arts.<\/p>\n
