\"Jorge<\/a><\/p>\n

MMA veteran Jorge Gurgel has retired from MMA after losing his mother to a tragic accident last month.<\/p>\n

On August 29th at 2 p.m. Gurgel’s mother departed the Apple store with her newly resotred iPad and headed home to finish packing her suitcases and head to the airport to head to Ireland, where she would stay for a year to work.<\/p>\n

A cab rushed through an intersection after racing a red light and struck and killed Gurgel’s mother.<\/p>\n

He spoke to MMAJunkie<\/a> about the devastating incident:<\/p>\n

\u201cI flipped out a little bit. \u2018What do you mean? What do you mean? How is she? How is my mom?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201c(The doctor) goes, \u2018I\u2019m sorry. She died.\u2019 Just like that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Gurgel recalled how he had spoken to his mother less than an hour before the tragic accident.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe literally said, \u2018If you die tomorrow, everybody\u2019s lives will still go on. You don\u2019t need to take care of everybody. I want you to get rid of all the bad energy in your life. You have to get rid of all the crazy.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was of those mom speeches,\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was all about positivity,\u201d Gurgel said. \u201cShe had the biggest smile in the world. She hated people that played \u2018poor me, poor me.\u2019 She was all about owning your s\u2013t. Get the hell up. Get your s\u2013t done. Don\u2019t find excuses. She did not believe in excuses.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody who knows me knows that she was my hero. She was many people\u2019s hero. The person I am today I owe 100 percent \u2013 not 99 percent \u2013 100 percent to her. Everything I am and everything I\u2019ve accomplished is because of her. She believed in me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Gurgel has decided to make a change in his life by changing the lives of others.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy goal now is to make people\u2019s lives better and make them feel better about themselves,\u201d Gurgel said. \u201cPeople that come (into the academy) overweight. People that come with low self-confidence. People that come who have been bullied in school. There\u2019s no better feeling than seeing them six months later winning NAGA (North American Grappling Association) competitions or knocking people out in muay Thai competitions, knowing that I had a part in all that. Knowing that I created that (is satisfying).<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to continue to change as many lives as I can for the positive using martial arts to do it. It changed my life. I want to spread it all forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy because I feel like she\u2019s with me,\u201d he said. \u201cShe talks to me. I\u2019m going to do what she told me. I\u2019m creating the life I want to live. And nobody can f\u2014ing stop me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
