UFC 173 is one of those events…
After removing Vitor Belfort from his promised title bid due to the ban on Tesosterone Replacement Therapy, the UFC put in an equally intriguing fighter to go opposite Chris Weidman in the form of Lyoto Machida.
All was well with UFC 173, until news hit today that, Weidman, is set to go under the knife for a knee injury and cannot compete.
Here’s the release from the UFC:
The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced today that middleweight champion Chris Weidman has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled title defense against Lyoto Machida on May 24. Weidman suffered a knee injury that will require minor surgery and his bout with Machida has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 5. A new main event for UFC 173 on May 24 will be announced in the days to come.
