After the original UFC 161 main event featuring interim champion Renan Barao vs Eddie Wineland was canceled due to an injury suffered by Barao, the UFC officially announced Dan Henderson vs Rashad Evans as the new main event. The organization didn’t stop there, however, as they decided to beef up the card with the addition of heavyweight Roy “Big Country” Nelson against Stipe Miocic.
A report on UFC Tonight hinted at the possibility, and the UFC has since confirmed the bout.
Miocic was originally scheduled to face Soa “The Hulk” Palelei, who is now left without an opponent. This is disappointing news for those of us anxious to see the hulking Australian’s return to the promotion after nearly six years. However, Roy Nelson should serve as a fantastic replacement coming off of first round blitz knockouts of Cheick Kongo, Matt Mitrione, and Dave Herman in his last three.
Will Micocic be number four?
Furthermore, it is still unsure whether Eddie Wineland will stay on the card. If a new opponent is secured, the event will feature a whopping six fight main card instead of the traditional five.
Also, Soa Palelei will now serve as a backup replacement in case any injuries are sustained to Stipe Miocic, Roy Nelson, or other heavyweight competitors Pat Barry and Shawn Jordan.
