Phil Davis executed his gameplan perfectly in this bout. Just when it looked like Teixeira was gaining momentum and was about to land some combinations, Davis would circle away and shoot for a takedown. He often landed the takedown from the side which allowed Davis to take Teixeira’s back. Teixeira was often unable to make it back to his feet and the only time he saw any offense on the ground was when he blocked a takedown.

Even though this fight drained the crowd, this was a fantastic performance by Phil Davis. He may not have landed many knockout blows, but he showed great strategy and took almost no damage en route to a victory. He has never been finished for a good reason, and that is because he neutralizes his opponent’s offense.
