Rashid Magomedov and Tony Martin both walked into the octagon tonight with stellar records, but it was Martin who was looking to protect his undefeated ways with a victory tonight.
Martin was ready from the get-go to keep his win-streak going but Magomedov tried his hardest to stay in the game. Tony Martin’s work on the ground in round one was nothing short of phenomenal. The way he worked for a kimura and transitioned to an armbar was fantastic, but it was Magomedov who truly impressed by pushing through the pain and rolling through— ultimately escaping both submission attempts.
The first round was a tough obstacle for Magomedov to overcome, but he persevered and put on a good effort throughout the rest of the fight. He did a decent job in the second controlling the pace of the fight and dictating where the action went.
Magomedov almost put Martin away with a guillotine choke early on in round three but Martin, just like Magomedov in round one, displayed great submission defense and escaped by utilizing his butterfly hooks. The rest of the round saw Martin working for a takedown that obviously was not going to happen, but he was biding time while he tried to deal with a broken nose. Magomedov landed a head kick right on the nose of Martin and he was having issues breathing for the remainder of the bout.
Magomedov outperformed Martin in rounds two and three and was awarded the judges’ decision. Martin’s win streak has ended and Magomedov picked up a win on his UFC debut.
Rashid Magomedov def. Tony Martin by way of Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-28)
