The main event at UFC Fight Night Korea was classic, text book Benson “Smooth” Henderson style of winning. Henderson (23-5 MMA) defeated Jorge Masvidal via split decision. This win marks the 11th time Henderson has won by split decision and 4th time getting his hand raised in a five round fight.
Henderson won the lightweight title back in 2012 against Frankie “The Answer” Edgar (19-4-1 MMA) by unanimous decision. Smooth went on a string of victories that went to the judges on his next three outings. Frankie Edgar (split decision), Nate Diaz (unanimous decision) and Gilbert Melendez (split decision), then a submission loss to Anthony “Showtime” Pettis ended a Henderson run defending the title three times.
After two straight losses to Rafael dos Anjos and Donald Cerrone at lightweight, Benson has fought at 170 (welterweight) division his last two outings with success. One of the questions after his last fight is which organization will he be moving to if it’s not with the UFC? Testing the waters translates to bigger sponsorship dollars and an early title shot regardless of the promotion.
The blackbelt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu former champion under John Crouch has a plan. “When I retire it will be retiring in the UFC I know that for sure, ” he told MMAjunkie “But I’m going to test the market, yes. ”
Henderson, no question, has been battle tested and proven inside the octagon and at 32 he has time to explore the ocean and come back to the shores of the UFC.
