So now you’ve taken your opponent’s back. Success! Now what to do from here?
Of course, taking an opponent’s back is just the first step to ending any conflict with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Usually in mixed martial arts, taking an opponent’s back signals that the end is near. It is extremely difficult to defend against anything when your back is taken.
To answer the question, there are lots of options once the back is taken. Today, let’s take a look at five back attacks everyone should know.
1) Rear Naked Choke
Known by its abbreviation, the almighty RNC, is most likely the first submission you will learn when you first study BJJ. It is simple, yet effective.
2) Triangle
Oftentimes when you take your opponent’s back, you can lock in a figure-four grip on the arm on the side of your opponent that you have the underhook on.
3) Armbar
One more option from back control and the figure-four grip that is readily available should the triangle be difficult to sink in, is the armbar from the back.
4) 7-Year-Old Choke
Knowing this escape, you can be ready for this and cup their chin(chinstrap) with both of your hands.
5) Swim Move
One more way your opponent will try to get out of back mount is by getting up on their hands and knees. This makes it hard for you to maintain good control because you are being thrown off balance from constantly shifting weight. You can escape from this position and use what Eddie Bravo calls the Swim Move.
