UFC welterweight Josh Koscheck (17-7) has been stricken with injury and was forced to withdraw from his UFC 163 bout with Demian Maia (18-4).
The two top welterweights were set to face off on August 3rd. With the short notice and legal complications that come along with setting up a fight past U.S. borders, the bout was scrapped all together. No word on whether or not the bout will be rescheduled or if Maia will receive a new opponent on another upcoming card.
Koscheck is coming off of a TKO loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 157. This loss marked Koscheck’s second in a row, the first time he has dropped two straight in his career. His first was to top welterweight contender, Johny Hendricks.
For Maia, he has been storming the gates to title contention as he has gone 3-0 since his move to welterweight, dispatching tough foes such as Dong Hyun Kim, Rick Story, and Jon Fitch. Now he sits in waiting in front of his phone, anticipating a call from the UFC to work out his next move.
UFC 163 takes place on August 3rd at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The main event features a featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and the Korean Zombie, Chan Sung Jung, a fight that was also hit with injury, knocking Anthony Pettis from his title bout with Aldo.
