Gabi Garcia remained undefeated on Saturday and moved to 3-0 after submitting Destanie Yarbrough with an Americana shoulder lock.
Fighting under the Japanese RIZIN banner for the third time, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt took Yarbrough to the mat three minutes into the opening round and dominated her opponent from there. Garcia got top control and rained down vicious ground-and-pound complete with knees to the head of a downed opponent, as RIZIN adopted the old PRIDE rules when the promotion launched last year.
Once Garcia softened Yarbrough a bit on the ground, she locked in an Americana and submitted her at 2:42 minutes into the first round.
So far, Garcia has fought and won three times for the RIZIN promotion, with two submissions and a TKO victory over Seini Draughn.
Unfortunately for Gabi, the UFC is no where close to having a women’s weight class that would adequately suit her 205-pound frame. However, RIZIN is known for open-weight bouts, and it seems Garcia is content fighting in Japan.
In fact, Garcia said she was open to fighting a man “and knocking him out” last month. Her trainer, former UFC and Strikeforce light heavyweight Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral discussed the idea in August:
“I think eventually down the road, if any (man) wants to step up, I think we can look into that in the future. A year from now, I think that there won’t be any more girls for her to fight, and the only chance for her to fight will be for a man to fight her. And he better watch out because he’s gonna get knocked out by a girl”
