VIDEO | Tyson Fury sends out inspiring message on mental health struggles

Tyson Fury

Speaking at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards over the weekend, undefeated heavyweight boxing star Tyson Fury delivered yet another inspiring message related to his recent mental health struggles.

In a rousing speech, the boxer said that he hopes that by answering the referee’s 10-count after being floored by a 12th-round punch in his recent battle with Deontay Wilder, he showed people that anything is possible.

“Many men would have stayed down after getting knocked down heavily by Deontay Wilder, but I wanted to show the world that anything was possible, and that no matter what you’ve been through in your life and what you’re going through, you always, always must continue to get up and keep going forward and fight back,” Tyson Fury said. “Because, the mental health story… We need to spread the word on mental health more. You know, there’s a lot of people still living in darkness, and too afraid to come out and speak about it in public.”

Tyson Fury reminded that even he, a ferocious heavyweight champion, has been stricken down by mental health struggles in the past, but that he was able to conquer them. He assures that anybody else, no matter their stature, can do the same.

“If I can do it, the big heavyweight champion of the world, 6 foot 9, 18 stone — I’m supposed to be a big tough guy — anybody can do it.”

In his last fight, Tyson Fury battled Deontay Wilder to a draw. The pair are expected to rematch for the WBC heavyweight title in the New Year — unless Wilder answers the recent callout of unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

The resurgent Tyson Fury is currently 27-0-1 overall with 19 wins by knockout.
